Eighth-Graders Get Lessons in Healthy Relationships
Heritage Grove Middle School eighth-grade students will receive a lesson in what constitutes a healthy relationship, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Dr. Ed Smith and his staff at Behavioral Health Education Specialists (BEHS) in Plainfield will give presentations to students to discuss healthy boundaries in peer relationships, including friendships and dating.
The six presentations will take place from 9-10:20 a.m., 10:20 a.m.-11:40 a.m., and from 1:10-2:30 p.m. on Feb. 15 and 16. Eighth-grade students will each attend one presentation. Heritage Grove is located at 12425 South Van Dyke Road, Plainfield.
During each 80-minute presentation, Smith and his staff will present information in a large group lecture format before breaking into small group discussions. They will talk about relationships as well as healthy coping strategies and positive decision making.
Students will learn appropriate emotional boundaries, empathy, and good coping strategies, said Heritage Grove Social Worker Angela Fedinec.
“Especially with the approaching transition to high school, it is very important for our students to figure out how to deal with stress and pressure,” Fedinec said.
