St. Mary Immaculate School parents, teachers and staff celebrated the opening of the 2012-2013 school year on Wednesday evening, Aug 29th.
Fr. David Medow, St. Mary Immaculate Pastor opened the evening with prayer, welcomed the parents and affirmed the parish’s commitment to providing the very best Catholic education.
John Garvey, Principal, spoke of his goals for the new school year, additions to the school’s bully-free program, the new core curriculum standards and introduced the faculty and staff. He officially welcomed new team members Mrs. Rose Chmara, fifth grade teacher; Mrs. Kristen Hughes, band director and K-5 music teacher; Miss Mary Ellen Butler, our school counselor working under the supervision of Dr. Ted Welsch and Mrs. Catriona Lynch our Technology Integration Coordinator working with our Technology team, assisting in technology teacher development, and other related fields in technology at SMI. While Mrs. Barbara Laverdiere is not new to SMI School, she has a new position as Mrs. Peg Erdmann’s teacher assistant.
John invited School families to participate in the new Grandparent/person Day activities on Friday morning Sept 14th and the School’s Annual Golf outing at the Bolingbrook Golf Club, also on September 14th.
Garvey also introduced the School Board, Home and School Association, our Co-Athletic Directors, and the Band Booster Club. Each outlined their programs and plans for the year.
The parents then had the opportunity to meet the teachers, follow their child’s schedule and get insight into the curriculum. The teachers enjoy the opportunity to acknowledge the parents’ interest in their child’s education while being able to connect faces with names. It is the beginning of positive communication between parent and teacher, and a comfort level that can be important throughout the year.
