Two hundred and nine District 202 high school seniors have been named 2013-2014 Illinois State Scholars because of their superior academic potential.

The number is four less than last year’s record-high 213 Scholars, but far exceeds the 169 Scholars from 2010, the first year that students from all four District 202 high schools could earn State Scholar status. 

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) awards the honor each year to students based on SAT, ACT and/or Prairie State Achievement Exam scores, and/or class rank at the end of the junior year. High school guidance counselors work in conjunction with ISAC to determine the winners. 

Each year’s State Scholar group comprises the top 10 percent of graduates from approved high schools.

The Illinois State Scholar program this year recognized 18,863 high school students statewide as this year’s State Scholars. Since 1979, over 582,000 Illinois students have been honored as State Scholars.

This year’s State Scholars include:  

• 46 students from Plainfield High School – Central Campus (down from 51 last year)
• 54 students from Plainfield South High School (up from 53 last year)
• 62 students from Plainfield North High School (up from 54 last year)
• 47 students from Plainfield East High School (down from 55 last year).  

“These students deserve praise and recognition for their hard work and commitment to academic excellence,” said District 202 Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Harper.

“They exemplify everything our teachers, staff and families have been doing in the last several years to improve our curriculum and instruction and to help all students do well in the classroom,” Harper said.
