A Beautiful Day for a Cycle Ride -- and to Help Needy Kids
The third annual Reindeer Toy Run starts in Plainfield Saturday; the goal is to collect toys and raise money to help needy children at Christmas.
Want to do something nice for someone on a nice day?
Buy a toy and hit the road.
The third annual Reindeer Toy Run to benefit kids in Will County will be Saturday morning at the American Legion Marne Post 13, 24741 Renwick Road (at South River Road), Plainfield.
Beginning at 8 a.m., coffee and baked goods will be served. Bikes will be blessed at 10:30 a.m.
The 100-mile motorcycle poker run starts at 11 a.m. and makes five stops at locations to be disclosed day of the event. The run returns to the post around 3 p.m. for a party with 50/50 and basket raffles, food provided by Uncle Bub’s and music by Wasted Space.
Registration is $15, $5 per passenger.
Non-motorcyclists are invited to attend as well.
Each participant is asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy. Money raised from the poker run will be used to buy more toys.
“We talk to schools, churches and SOS Children’s Village in Lockport and ask about kids who don’t get toys for Christmas,” said Leonard Heeg, whose wife Patricia Heeg has served as president of the Reindeer Toy Run since its inception. She continues doing so even while undergoing physical therapy to recover from two strokes.
The Heegs, of Lockport, said $1,200 was raised in 2010.
This year’s run is expected to be even bigger with more than 150 participants, said Julie Auten, vice president of the run.
“The minute the run is over, we get the wish lists,” Auten said.
Toys are organized by age for boys and girls, and distributed to SOS, an alternative to foster care, the Lockport Fish Food Pantry and elsewhere.
Themed “Putting Big Smiles on Little Faces,” the Reindeer Toy Run is presented by a group of volunteers who raise money throughout the year through bake sales and booths at craft shows and farmers markets.
