A fire in the 23000 block of Rolf Road spread to a second dwelling, causing massive damage, but no injuries to the residents.

Updated at 9:05 p.m. June 27:

Investigators were working to determine the cause of the fire that swept through two homes, displacing two families, Wednesday evening.

Jon Stratton said the blaze at the first home, located at 23648 Rolf Rd., was already well involved and had spread east to the house next door by the time firefighters arrived.

Stratton said the fire was exacerbated by the dry, windy conditions. Firefighters, who received the call around 5:40 p.m., also faced another challenge, he said.

"There are no hydrants out here," he said. "We had to truck all our water in."

A Nicor crew also had to shut off a ruptured gas meter at the home.

Stratton said one resident was home at the first house when the fire started but got out unscathed. The owners of the second house were not there when the blaze got under way.

"Investigators are talking to [the residents] right now," Stratton said.

No people were injured in the fire, and a family dog was able to escape the first home.

"He got out OK, but we've got a cat [in the second house] that might not have made it," Stratton said.

Original story - 8:19 p.m.

A fire destroyed one home and spread to another in Plainfield’s Plainsman Terrace subdivision Wednesday afternoon.

Neighbors said the blaze at 23648 Rolf Rd. quickly consumed the home and spreading to the next-door neighbor’s house, which was also heavily damaged.

No injuries have been reported.

The first home collapsed in the blaze, with just the chimney left standing, along with a burned-out vehicle that had been parked between the homes.

The five occupants of the home were uninjured, and the family dog also made it out safe, according to a neighbor, who declined to give his name.

The three residents of the second home were also unharmed; the family’s cat was still missing Wednesday evening.

The neighbor said he was alerted to the fire by a knock on the door shortly after 6 p.m.

"It was probably 10 minutes after 6 and somebody was knocking at my back door, and nobody knocks at my back door," he said. Neighbors urged the man to move his boat, fearing it was in the path of the fire.

The man said he watched as the first home was consumed and collapsed.

"It got hot and it came down pretty quickly," he said.

Other area fire departments assisting on the call included Oswego, Troy, Homer Glen, Romeoville and Minooka.
