Illinois Unemployment Rates Drop Across the Board in September
In the southwest suburbs, the unemployment rate dropped from August to September this year and is generally below the state average, according to data released last week.

The unemployment rates in Illinois is still above 8 percent, but most communities saw a decrease in out-of-work residents in September 2012, according to new figures released last week.
September local unemployment rates fell in every metro area compared to last year, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
"This month's report highlights that we have made steady progress in lowering the unemployment rate, but more needs to be done," IDES Director Jay Rowell said in a news release. "Hiring managers need to see consistent, long-term tax policy and spending priorities by the federal government before we will see stronger hiring increases."
IDES generally reports unemployment figures for municipalities with populations of 25,000 or more people. The numbers measure unemployment for residents who live in a certain town, not those who work in the town.
Statewide the unemployment rate dropped from 8.9 percent in August 2012 to 8.1 percent in September. Compared to September 2011, unemployment in Illinois has dropped 1.7 percent.
Although fewer people are out of work in Illinois as of late, the rate still lags behind the national average of 7.6 percent unemployment. Illinois saw slightly larger gains in the last month, though, with a .9 percent drop compared to .6 percent nationally.

Chicago Tribune reports the state unemployment rate for Sept is 8.8% (http://tinyurl.com/9rucsv4) not 8.1% as reported here.
Any idea on why the difference in the numbers if they both come from IDES?

8.8% is the SA(Seasonally Adjusted) number
8.1% is the non-SA number.
8.1% compares identical months, but in different years. 8.8% compares this month to the last month adjusting for seasonal variations by applying a constant to the existing numbers based on the month of the year.
8.1% is the 'real' number. 8.8% is the number after taking out the jobs that would normally have been added at that time of year anyway(heavily weighted to jobs in farming in late summer)

http://www.ides.illinois.gov/page.aspx?item=908 Currently SEPT is 8.8 the US avg for 3 months is 8.1 maybe that is what they are looking at and if you look at three month avg for IL it is 8.9. Business leaders are moving from Illinois because the leaders are "I WANT" spending our cash. Time to spend on "I NEED" spending and maybe we can get Illinois fixed

Thanks for the link, greg. IDES even says IL for Sept is 8.8% (3 mo avg = 8.9%).
Wait until the 'readjust' that number after the elections. So far, every unemployment number for the last 44 months has been updated higher than originally reported.

The question to ask is, will the numbers for October come out on Friday? Or will the administration use Sandy as an excuse to hold the numbers.
Will be interesting to see what the numbers will be this time if California remembers to send in their numbers. Unlike the month of Sept. where the CA numbers were missing.

Where are your stats to back this up? If this many stopped looking for work, who's feeding and housing these people? The "stat" you quote is a GOP lie that is all that they have to fall back on since their plan to totally destroy the economy to hurt the President's ability to do his job.

That number is actually U6. a measure of 'marginally employed/unemployed combined'. While it does also include those who gave up looking for work, there is not 15% of the workforce not working. It includes such people as those who work 35 hours a week. Hardly 'unemployed' as Kevin has attempted to state.
The only way that Kevin could have written that, is if he just repeated what he heard someone else say. Nobody that understands how U6 is measured would ever repeat something that they know to be factually incorrect.
