We want to know where you go when the red-meat craving hits you. You have until Aug. 17 to vote.

With cheese or without. Char-grilled or flame broiled. Maybe some ketchup, maybe not. Every burger fan has his or her own way of eating them, and everyone's got a favorite spot to grab that uniquely American dish.

So what's yours? Patch is relaunching its Readers' Choice program and we're asking you, your family, friends, neighbors, coworkers and anyone else who knows about great burgers to vote for your picks for the best spots in Plainfield to have a burger.

So far, 4 out of 5 people don't know that McBrides is not in Plainfield.

There should be a sub-poll;
How many people do not know what city they currently live in?

Tim, I would like to invite you to McBrides to enjoy our hand pattied, fresh burger made daily with local beef! We are located about 1/4 mile east of Plainfield South HS. 7162 Caton Farm Road, Plainfield, IL. Come in and enjoy the burger on us, we look forward to seeing you!

I've been there, plenty of times.
But it's still within the city limits of Joliet. Plainfield South High School is also.

5 out of 6, it would seem.

Clearly someone who works with the Patch also is connected with McBrides. I've been there many, many times. While it is a fine establishment, let's be real - they aren't doing anything special. Certainly nothing above and beyond what every other watering hole in Plainfield is doing (most of which are not even mentioned once). Disagreements about city limits vs. mailing addresses aside - What a joke that the majority of votes in every restaurant or bar category are for McBrides when there are dozens of similar establishments. Are we supposed to take this voting system seriously??

I'm not aware of anyone with Patch who is connected with McBrides. Perhaps the staff is sharing this story with their friends and Facebook fans, which is totally fair game. If you've got a business you'd like to support, please nominate them, and feel free to ask others to do the same. By the way, this is just the nomination period — voting doesn't start until late July.

Agreed, the word "vote" should be replaced by the word "nomination" in my previous post. Not sure those semantics change the sentiment of my post, but point taken.

Tap House Grill is best
.... Plus.... look up McBrides people. It's in PLAINFIELD. The south side of Plainfield shares alot with Joliet (including McBrides), but the postal address and legal address is PLAINFIELD.

Guys how can you possibly vote for Red Robin?! They are a corporate establishment that doesn't put and love into their food.. I have my hopes for who wins but for the love of God choose a local non corporate burger! Most mom and pop places around here use local, high quality, hand stuffed burgers/ beef ( Hop scotch an vine).

jesus christ, this TIM character seems like a D-bag. How is Mcbrides not in Plainfield when they have a Plainfield mailing address? You seem like the type of guy who would say "they should be the wrigleyville cubs or the bridgeport whitesox because thats the neighborhood their in"

McBrides is not in Plainfield, because it is within the city limits of Joliet.
http://www.city-data.com/city/Joliet-Illinois.html

Now you know.

Postal codes have nothing to do with city boundaries, they have to do with what city the POST OFFICE is located in that delivers mail to the area. Since this area is closer by road to the Plainfield post office than it is to the Joliet post office when these boundaries were established decades ago, this is where mail is delivered from.

Wrigleyville is not a city, and neither is Bridgeport. They are neighborhoods.
Joliet is not a neighborhood, and neither is Plainfield. They are cities.

The link above outlines the city boundaries with a dark blue line. You can zoom right in on McBrides parking lot, and see it is quite clearly within Joliet, even though right across the street to the north is not.

Plainfield is not a city, it's a village. They could recharter as a city, but as of now, they are legally a village and not a city. It's a significant difference in the state laws.

This has become the most rediculous discussion....not who has the better burger but who qualifies due to address, city mapping, or even emergency response personnel! Vote for whoever you feel has the best burger being served to the residents of Plainfield or don't.....I know I can cook a mean burger on the grill but I can't nominate myself since I may fall into some other cities jurisdiction!!! Haha

As the owners of McBride's, my wife & I feel the need to apologize for the direction this thread has gone. Although we have not been involved in the comments or even the concern of the address or location (minus when we invited "Tim" to try our burger) we are shocked at how concerned people are as to whether we are in Joliet or Plainfield. YES, we are in Joliet village limits and I do hold a Joliet liquor license. My home also is in the Joliet village limits, with a Plainfield mailing address and shorewood schools. Guess I don't know what community I belong in??
I consider myself a Plainfield resident because that is the address that I have taught my children. I also contribute to the plainfield economy any chance I can. My wife & I eat lunch downtown Plainfield, attend the Plainfield fireworks, Plainfield Fest etc..
We also are going to sponsor a tent in the Plainfield Riverdays Fest. We are a part of this community and by saying that we aren't you are also saying that all the people in the surrounding neighborhoods are not part of the Plainfield community. They support your bars, restaraunts etc. Downtown Joliet is 25 minutes east, our downtown is PLAINFIELD. And...our burgers ROCK!

Joliet is a full flledged city, not a village. LOL!

Honestly, there are times when the argument of which jurisdiction an establishment is in is relevant. For this, friendly informal poll, I believe it's more about who has the best burger in the Plainfield area, not necessarily within the village limits.

I doubt most people actually know exactly where the Plainfield village limits and the Joliet city limits run anymore anyway. I know I lost track several years back, and I've been in town 35 years.

I would argue that if there were a good burger joint located within the Bolingbrook, or Romeoville boundaries, but close enough to Plainfield to be seen as part of the community, then they're fair game. This is, after all, only an informal survey anyway.

Well said. The baton farm corridor of homes and business, although within the city limits of Joliet, not only have Plainfield mailing addresses but pay taxes to Plainfield school district, are located within Plainfield township, and belong to Plainfield park district. PLENTY of my tax and genera
l consumer dollars contribute to Plainfield economy so if I want to vote for a burger in PLAINFIELD or JOLIET, I will do just that. Jeeze people.

I'm going to every one of these places within the next week or so, and i'll write about it for everyone. The only place I won't be going to is Red Robin, which shouldn't be on the list because it's a chain restaurant and doesn't deserve to be in the same category as the rest.

And yes, i'll be going to McBrides and they will get the same treatment as any of the other restaurants.

Someone's interpretation of jurisdiction shouldn't have a bearing on great food.

Lisa

1:09 pm on Sunday, July 29, 2012

Great point, John! We live in an area where boarders intersect and overlap. Apparently some patch readers have obsessive map and boundary compulsions. I'm sure there are therapists and counselors located within the village of Plainfield to help them with these issues.

Unless they're all renting rooms in a crowded house within the Village of Plainfield. Then, they're likely boarders that intersect and overlap. ;)

John Crissup

1:25 pm on Sunday, July 29, 2012

By the way, for the record, I chose Red Robin. While I firmly believe it's important to patronize the local businesses, the fact of the matter is, in my own personal opinion, the local burgers have just gotten kind of bland. It's the same old thing everywhere. Mickey O'Neill's has an interesting twist with their bender burger (topped with corned beef), but if you don't like thousand island dressing, their sauce choices are essentially limited to mustard or ketchup. No regular horseradish sauce to be had. Hopscotch and Vine had a good burger with their Caribbean burger, but that was only available for a day or two, and their menu burgers and pretty unimpressive to me.

Corporate chain or not, Red Robin has an extensive variety of quality burgers, and are willing to customize them any way you would like. And, the vote doesn't specifically ask which local small businesses have the best burger, so chains are fair game here.

Is McBrides in Joliet? Really who cares? Best burger and good people.

Nicole B.

2:51 pm on Sunday, July 29, 2012

McBrides definitely has the best burgers. To Ron, you are obviously affiliated with one of the other nominees & are therefore threatened by the competition of McBrides. That would be the only answer that would explain your pigheadedness over the frickin' boundries. If there address is PLAINFIELD, then they have every right to be included in a PLAINFIELD survey! Don't hate on them just because you know they are going to win! There burgers are by far the BEST in PLAINFIELD! To Ron & Tim.... get over yourselves!! Seriously, nobody wants to read your juvenile garbage. If you have a problem with the address system then take it up with those responsible for determining the addresses!

So, all this discussion inspired me. I ran out to McBrides to have a burger. I actually hadn't been there in years, meaning for all intensive purposes, I hadn't been there (they've changed ownership twice). Unfortunately (or fortunately), the Cuban panini grabbed my attention instead. But I did get to try my wife's bacon cheeseburger. I have to say, both items were pretty darned good. If you haven't tried them in recent years, it's worth a trip back.

This isn't a contest of what is "Positively Plainfield", the failed add campaign from a few years back, it's simply a fun contest for the best burger IN Plainfield. Village, City, Township - it all qualifies as Plainfield. Like us Plainfield Southies or not we have the best burger at McBrides.

For those of us that live on the South side we consider ourselves Plainfield. We shop Plainfield, support Plainfield, our kids go to school in Plainfield, our mailing addresses are Plainfield, mail is delivered by the Plainfield post office, our Park District is Plainfield. Most of our kids play sports in Plainfield. We pay Plainfield taxes for everything except for Police & Fire. I have to say this was the silliest group of comments I've ever read.

Is there anyone out there who has ever thought gee I really want to try this restaurant, the map says it's located in XYZ, but I need to make sure that is actually the town they are incorporated into. I need to do my research to see if it's just their mailing address or if they are actually incorporated into that town before I go. That is always my FIRST priority in choosing a dining establishment. LOL
