Plainfield Business Briefs: Local Hot Dog Restaurants Close

What's happening on the local business scene.

Two Plainfield eateries recently bit the dust.

Just Judi’s, which opened in the former site of Lindy's Chili and Gertie's Ice Cream this May, has closed its doors for good.

The restaurant, owned by former Lindy’s/Gertie’s employee Judi Adams, occupied the space at 15932 S. Lincoln Highway for roughly six months. Just Judi’s specialized in burgers, hot dogs, Philly steaks and fries.

Although the windows were covered last week at the Lincoln Highway storefront, a sign was posted noting that a new Mexican restaurant, Mariachi Grill, is coming soon to the site.

Another Plainfield hot dog joint, Binnie’s Dog House, also recently closed. Located at 15412S. Route 59 near Peter Rubi and the new Wild West BBQ, opened in March 2012.

Hot dog lovers in Plainfield still have some local options:

As far as new Plainfield eateries go, expect at least two in the new year. A Chipotle Mexican restaurant and a Which Wich sandwich shop are scheduled to open sometime in 2013 in the Kensington South shopping center at 127th Street and Route 59.

Its a shame about Binnies. They had good food but service levels were pretty poor. On more than one occassion I personally saw or had heard of people being spoken to poorly by the staff and management. People had to wait a long time for "fast food". The location was good during soccer season and the inability to capitalize on that was clearly costly. I'm not sure how a place can open and not make it a full year before throwing in the towel. I will miss the beef sandwiches and burgers there because they were excellent.

Doggie Diner put Binnies to shame

I just tried Binnies for the first time right before Christmas. Found the food to be pretty good at a decent price. Only a few other customers there during the lunch hour, though. Talked to the manager/owner(?) and told her I would definitely be back with my wife. She seemed optimistic and gave no indication at that time of any impending doom. Went back one week later, and the doors were locked. Another empty storefront to look at every day on my drive along Rt 59.

I thought Binnie's was pretty good. The problem is many people probably underestimate how many hot dogs and beefs it takes to profit enough to pay the rent and all the other overhead. Food has a pretty low profit margin and unless you're doing a land office business, it's harder to survive than you would imagine.

Chipotle is going to over-saturate just like Krispy Kreme did several years ago and it will be the demise of the brand. There is one at 95th and 59 and another by the mall. I always liked going there because it was something you don't find on every corner...soon it will be like all the rest.

Been to Binnie's twice, The beef sandwich was good, (take out)
Dined in with a party of 9 after a football game and the quality of the food was bad, the buns were not fresh, and the customer service was poor, orders were filled wrong, it is no surprise to me that this establishment went under. I would be nice to see an authentic Mexican Restaurant go up somewhere in Plainfield, that is good and reasonable

There is a great Mexican restaurant in Plainfield on Route 59 just north of route 27. It's called Delicia Mexican Grill12337 Route 59 Suite 127 Plainfield, IL 60585
We had our family Christmas party there and it was delicious and the people are really nice. We had a semi-private area for the party and hosted 22 people. Great margaritas too! It opened about 2 months ago.

Went to Binnie's once for take out, food was average and not good enough to go back and deal with the employees poor attitude. It was not the food that made Binnie's go under it was customer service. I hope that restaurants read comments that are placed here, I hate to see any business close anywhere. I have also been to Wild wild west, service was good food was okay I do like Baby back blues better for BBQ.

@Plainfield Reader

Went to Delicia's the first day it opened, and subsequent visit's because, I found the food to be first rate and the staff very helpful. Unfortunately, went back last week to find the menu changed, the staff all gone, new chef, not to the better, in my estimation. Ordered what I usually get, the Carne Asada, medium rare, came out well done and also, the steak was so thin and small, that I called the manager over, told him, and he apologized and had them redo another order, which, of course took more time. They got it correct the second time. I hesitate to go back, unfortunately, as I stated, all was fine until all of the changes they are making.

High Hopes for OL

@Angels

His parents pay property taxes and his son likes it, so what is your point about property taxes ? At least they eat there and the income made by the restaurant stays in Plainfield.

I agree about Chipotle. The one in Jolirt started out good but food has gone down hill lately. Steak had all sorts of gristle last time we were there. Overrated. If the customer service is not good things will go downhill fast. Sorry to hear about those 2 going under. There is a which wich in oak room I have been to for lunch and every time I order a French dip the same employee complains about it. Lets hope this one is better.

with one in Shorewood and one in Naperville I do not feel that a wise businessman would dilute this corridor,kinda like banks and gas stations

Please elaborate, as to how the village treated Portillo's like dirt, so he built somewhere else ?

More gas stations are needed in the downtown area. There are limited options for fueling your vehicle and the pumps are packed at most of the other stations in town. Plainfield needs more gas.

@British

There are plenty of other gas stations throughout the village, within a short distance from downtown, and as long as I have lived in Plainfield, there was never a time when they were so packed that I had to wait. Besides, gas stations are not the sort of business that will draw customers, or people looking to locate in Plainfield, better restaurants and maybe a theater would be a much better choice.

For the future

The problem with hotdog stands and those type of businesses, is that they need to have bsusiness during the day to stay alive. If you do not invision that place as a place you would go to for dinner like a Culvers, Portillo's, Chilli's etc. people won't go enough to keep it in business. If the business is only looked at like a place you would go to after a little league game, or a quick bite on the run it can't survive. There are not enough business people working in Plainfiled to support the small local places and all the McDonald's, Culvers, white castle etc. The competition is to great. If we had more industry, it would create more business for hot dog stands, beef stands, and sandwich shops. Your regular blue collar fork truck driver, production worker etc. love those type of places for lunch, and support them. That is why it works in places like the city
