Why does nothing survive in this town? It's not like there not enough people.

This restaurant felt the impact of the Fox Valley location. The owner is opening a new franchise in Wheaton next month. Too bad he didn't reinvest in Plainfield, his new biz sounds fun and certainly would have brought a lot of new interest to our area.

Why would they open another franchise in Wheaton? They already did that and it closed.

It is a bakery, not a pizza place.

This is correct. The new corporate management is not strict enough with territories or cost-benefit analysis. The owner could not withstand the Fox Valley competition on weekends.

Although I didnt really care for their pizza and atmosphere (way too many kids and noise for me) I'm actually surprised this location closed. It seems that every time I drove by, they were pretty busy.

Yes, it was busy and noisy but no longer profitable. Try Franks Night Out, Delicia, and NBC on the strip down the road across from W-M.

The CiCi's franchise is closing stores across the US, so I doubt that it has anything to do with Plainfield per se

Just add it to the list of closures and lack of new openings. Need our village government to use the tools it has to attract new business and approve new business unlike the Dunkin Donuts they shot down in downtown Plainfield.

Why does plainfield need ANOTHER dunkin? There is one on 119th, 127th at walmart, and at 135th. Do we need one at every corner?

Why do you care if we get another Dunkin Donuts? If they pay their rent, pay their employees, and pay their sales taxes it's all GOOD! Apparently they are opening on every corner because they have the customers to support it. Much like having a McDonalds on Rte. 59 and one being considered right down the street at Rte 30....

It's either Obamacare or the Plainfield Cops responsible for this. Need commenters to clear it up for me.

Great!!! SO lets get another bank, nail salon, dry cleaner or Chinese take out restaurant to take over its location. We need more of those in Plainfield. It would be great if we could get better restaurants and other businesses othe than those listed above into Plainfield.

We were very sad to hear about Cicis. We went there as a family at least once every two weeks. This is how we rewarded good behavior with our girls. Everyone there was great and the service was phenomenal. Not to mention the best salad bar of any Cicis and great fresh pizza upon request. I was very surprised since it always seemed like it was a busy location. We tried the one in Naperville and it just didn't compare...so we'll just have to find another family friendly place to visit.

Thank you very much for noticing the employees hard work and dedication to the store!! However, its crazy that the owner did not recognize this and at least warn the employees. Its sad how they just received a text from a fellow coworker as the notice. Not even a single call or email or any notice form the owner. Kind of crappy on his part if you ask me.

People in plainfield like to complain about restaurants closing but they won't go to a restaurant unless the restaurant is basically giving the food away....last time I checked restaurants have bills to pay and if their customers don't understand that then the people of plainfield need to understand that nothing will stay open here as long as you continue to be cheap.

JB.......You & a few other people commenting on this topic actually get it. You've hit the nail on the head. In Chicago proper, good pizzarias prosper regardless of price. The great "$20.00/Pizza" pizzaria is "KING" not the $5-$10 disappointment the chains call pizza. Here in Plainfield, price seems to be the almighty factor. Too many people are just trying to fill their kids stomachs as cheap as possible. Maintain this attitude, and I'm sure we'll more restaurant failures in Plainfield. Restaurants not only need to pay their bills, but also need and deserve to earn a living...........MP

Is there a source for unusual activity of "CiCi's closing stores across the US" other than usual openings and closings of a franchise?

CiCi's Pizza was busier than most in plainfield. However 100 guests for dinner only equals $500. That just doesn't pay the bills. The concept itself is in ruins. Won't survive. Buffets belong in the south. They have never done well in the midwest.

I don't understand why some citizens seem to take it personally when a small business located in Plainfield closes, especially a restaurant or bar. This is normal.
The bigger surprise is that CiCi’s survived past the grand opening.

As of last year Cici's had 600 locations and they plan to add 500 more by year 2020. It is not like the business model is broken...

If the new Fox Valley location is surviving then another Cici's here with a new owner could definitely survive. They don't have to market too much anyway, just keep the existing customer base.

AGREE! But that will never happen. People think restaurants that sell quality food are too expensive, therefore they frequent places like Cicis, cheap family food- but when sales are down and rent is high it's a no win. People with tastebuds go north. Cicis is junk, reward your family with REAL food!

We agree and do go there. The pizza is excellent (Jane Lynch's favorite) and the buffet is more substantial, albeit pricey. Pam is a good hostess and server.

I received the email from CiCi's yesterday, I am still VERY upset about it. This was THE BEST place to go with my son, & the only CiCi's location we care to visit. We have been to the Naperville location, & I fail to believe they would impact the Plainfield location. Naperville is not busy, lacks the friendliness of Plainfield & just plain sucks.

We live in the Southeast corner of Aurora. This restaurant brought us to Plainfield vs. Oswego. Closing this location is terrible for the shopping centers too, we would eat at CiCi's then shop at Kohl's, then head to Wal-Mart or Target down the road. Now we will likely find a restaurant in Oswego then shop there.

Way to screw Plainfield, what a dumb decision to close this location.

Jeremy - those are great comments. The Village and Chamber of Commerce need to figure out why restaurants can't survive here, despite high traffic. Cici's target market is families with kids so those of you who didn't like it should not be putting down the fact that kids really do like the food and get excited to go somewhere they feel comfortable. The Naperville location is too far away to have a huge impact on patrons from Plainfield, Oswego, south Naperville and south Aurora. I'm really surprised this place closed, but it seems to be an epidemic. If rent is one of the big source issues, perhaps the Village and Chamber should focus on educating property owners on true market values and get them to realize that having a full property with slightly cheaper rents is still more profitable than an empty property.

Barbara Seiden

12:42 pm on Thursday, February 21, 2013

Let me clarify, I do not actually know what efforts the Village and Chamber currently have underway and maybe there are things in the works that take longer to have an impact, but boy, it seems like something needs to change.

Businesses cannot live in a climate where they give, give and give with no return. The politics in this town has got to stop. Businesses are running from Plainfield and investing in other towns and Cici's is a great example.

The Plainfield Cici's was number one in the region for a while there. Then other franchise locations started opening up and diluting the profits. You can't keep opening the same old franchises and expect new profits. You are just diluting the profits until you are left with another vacant building. Plainfield needs new concepts and fast.

I have never eaten at Cici's. I walked in once and took a peek but it did not look appealing. Plus hearing about the robberies made it less appealing of a place to eat. What I really wish we would get is a Portillo's with a Barnelli's. One right near 135th and Plainfield would be a perfect midpoint for the one way south on Route 59 and the one in Naperville on Route 59. If you like Mexican, Delicia's is really nice near 127th.

I know it's easier said than done, but I would like to see more original/independent concepts open in our town. The problem with chains is that, if they are successful, they multiply. Would I like to go to the Red Robin (BW3, Chili's, etc.) in Plainfield or the one in Warrenville or the one in Bolingbrook or the one in Oswego... You get the idea. We have a handful of decent one-of-a-kind establishments in our town. It would be cool to have more.

To the comments about feeding our stomaches cheap food. In this economy sometimes thats all we can do and why shouldnt we be able to take our families out for a decent meal at a reasonable price. Of course, we would love to be able to walk into a fancier more expensive restaurant but our wallets say otherwise. Cici's was a great kid friendly restaurant and its a shame it had to close!
