Police: Crest Hill Woman’s Death Ruled a Homicide

89-year-old Dorothy Dumyahn died Sunday before her Caton Farm Road home was set on fire, officials said.

An 89-year-old woman found early Sunday in her burning Caton Farm Road home was murdered, Crest Hill police said Monday.

Deputy Chief Ed Clark said the death of Dorothy Dumyahn is being investigated as a homicide.

Clark was tight-lipped about the circumstances surrounding Dumyahn’s death, but Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said it appears the elderly woman was murdered, and the fire was set to conceal the crime, according to the Herald-News.

Clark declined to discuss the elderly woman’s cause of death.

“I can’t really elaborate on that for investigative purposes,” he said, adding he also could not discuss whether a suspect has been identified in the case.

Police are interviewing witnesses, and do not believe there is any danger to other members of the community, Clark said.

“With the information we have right now, we do not believe it’s something the public at large should be concerned about,” he said.

Police said Dumyahn, who lived alone, is believed to be the only victim.

The blaze was discovered around 8:50 a.m. when an off-duty Lockport Township firefighter spotted the flames as he passed by the home at 2309 Caton Farm Road.

Clark said Crest Hill police are working with Will/Grundy Major Crimes Task Force to investigate Dumyahn’s murder.

How convenient that an off duty fire fighter all the way from Lockport at 8:00 in the morning just happened to spot the flames of a house where a murder took place. Wow what luck. How many people ever just happen to be driving by a house that is on fire?

What are you implying? Maybe he was on his way home from work, taking his kids to school or running errands.

You certainly have a lot of nerve! If that we're your family you would be grateful and consider it a blessing that he were there -- ever heard that you're always where you're supposed to be? There was a reason he left his house at the exact time that he did or he may not have even seen the fire. During what is supposed to be a time of thanks, you were very rude and unappreciative toward a man that risked his life (and does so daily) to protect us ... And yes, he would even run into your house - putting his life on the line for an ungrateful presumptuous person like you!! I think you owe him an apology.

Wow Christina, your an idiot! What are the chances of a scumbag like yourself driving by, seeing flames coming from a home, and keep driving by without ever calling 911 to report it??? Hmm, I bet pretty high.

Good job JB. Thank goodness someone is keeping a watchful eye.

Christina: The entire town of Crest Hill is in Lockport Township Fire District. So is half of Romeoville and other towns. You should not criticize until you know all of the facts. I feel very forunate that JB was there at that time and place. i live in that subdivision. If not for his call and the quick response of the fire department, other houses could have burned also, putting a lot of people at risk.
Thank You JB! Shame on you Christina!
