State Representative Tom Cross (R-Oswego) and Edward Hospital are teaming up to sponsor a Diabetes Awareness Fair free for local families and interested residents featuring keynote speaker

The Diabetes Awareness Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to Noon on Saturday, November 17 at Edward Plainfield Campus located at 24600 W 127th Street in Plainfield.
This year’s fair features MLB Hall of Famer Lou Brock speaking on managing his Type 2 diabetes and how it has impacted his life. Brock is rated in the top 100 players to ever play the game.
“Diabetes can affect everyone and the number of new diagnoses increases every day,” said Cross. “We are thrilled to have a baseball legend join us to bring awareness to such a crucial issue for local families.”
The event includes free admission, refreshments and most importantly, information and resources on living with diabetes. Certified Diabetes Educators and doctors from Edward Hospital will be available to talk with visitors about their concerns on diabetes.
“This event will provide information not only for those who have diabetes, but also for those who may be at risk and may not know it,” said Cross. “Diabetes is very manageable if you receive proper medical care and education.”
Visitors will be able to get free blood glucose testing, podiatric foot screenings, kidney disease testing, A1C checks, blood pressure checks and more.
The National Kidney Foundation is bringing the Kidney mobile, an interactive educational bus while the American Diabetes Association will be available to speak one-on-one with attendees. In addition, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation will be available to talk about how diabetes affects children.

More About Edward Plainfield Medical Campus
Edward Hospital expanded into Plainfield in 2006 when it built an immediate care facility on 127th Street. Since then, an outpatient surgery, cancer center, medical building and 24 hour Emergency Room have been added. Because it's affiliated with Edward Hospital in Naperville, patients can also access all of the other services the hospital offers. Spokesman Keith Hartenberger says that Plainfield greatly complements Edward Hospital in that residents want access to quality medical care. Subsequently, the facility offers services such as outpatient surgery and cancer care that residents would otherwise have to leave town to obtain.
