Gay Marriage News Sparks Debate ... About Guns?

Plus headlines you may have missed.

On Tuesday, the General Assembly approved same-sex marriage, setting the stage for Illinois to become the 15th state to legalize gay marriage.

Understandably, the historic news stirred up debate among readers, but not just about whether same-sex couples should be allowed to marry. The conversation quickly took a turn, with commenters going off on tangents about, among other things, gun control and the separation of church and state.

A sample of some comments that appeared on Patch after the news broke:

Holli LongProud of our representatives. Thank you Tom Cross! What a courageous vote for justice.

geohondroDisgusting and vile!!! This country is going down the toilet fast!!

Tom Nosal@geohondro No. What's making this country go down the toilet fast is allowing people to walk around with guns so they can randomly shoot people in airports.

Matt B.Wonder how your views on guns will change if your in a situation where a gun saves your life Tom. Like it or not it is because of guns that this country won its freedom from England. African Americans are no longer slaves because of guns. We won WWI and WWII because of guns. But the left always brings up the latest shooting and tries to blame it on the NRA, guns, the Tea Party, Conservatives, ETC... The last time I checked we have the right to bear arms. The Bill of Rights guarantees that. But you go ahead and keep blaming guns for the and the evil Tea Party and the NRA for this country "going down the toilet." I'm glad you get to practice your 1st Amendment right. I'm glad we live in a country where we all can do that.

BarbI do not understand why this is such a hot issue for people. Why do you care what other people do if it doesn't affect you? I think people should have the right to be with who they want. It isn't a biblical issue since there is supposed to be a separation of church and state. If people want a civil union who am I to say they shouldn't.

HercSo Barb are you saying, because we have separation of church and state people can get married they just can't go to church? Or how about you can have morals at church but not out on the street? The point I'm trying to get across to you is this is a moral issue for many people. Many people believe in the teachings of their church.

Where do you stand on the issue? Did Illinois legislators make the right call?
