A draft budget calling for a
reduction in spending of over $800,000 in the coming fiscal year was reviewed
by Plainfield Township Park District Commissioners this week.  The document will be placed on file for
public review, with a hearing and expected passage slated for the Board’s
regular meeting on July 24th.

“This budget is a first step
to reverse the trend away from higher annual spending year after year,” said
Board President Peter Hurtado.  “When so
many of our neighbors and fellow taxpayers are struggling to make ends meet in
this economy we feel compelled to do whatever we can to limit their tax
burden.  At the same time, we understand
we exist to provide recreational and educational opportunities for our
residents, young and old alike, and this budget keeps our programs intact and
even includes new offerings.”

The Park District expects to
spend an estimated $10.38 million for the fiscal year that begins July 1st,
down from last year’s $11.22 million.
The roughly 7.5% decrease was worked out in a series of meetings between
new Executive Director Garrett Peck, Assistant Director Cameron Bettin and each
of the several department directors.

“Our staff deserves a
lot of credit for this budget,” Peck said, “as their efforts to hold the line
wherever possible have led to our success on behalf of District residents.  This budget, and the tax levy scheduled to be
adopted this fall, will prove we’re serious about saving every dollar we can,
whenever we can.  Taxpayers expect and
deserve no less.  And although we’re only
a small part of the overall property tax bill, we think any place to save is a
good place.”
