One year and growing for Edward Healthcare Center in south Plainfield

As the Edward Healthcare Center at Route 59 and Dayfield Dr. in Plainfield marks its first anniversary at its spacious 22,000 square foot facility, it's averaging 200 new patients a month in 2013.  The Center, which was previously located on Frederick St. in Plainfield, opened in August 2012.

"People from the area tell us they're happy to have Edward services and physicians brought to their community.  We're also drawing patients from the Shorewood, Joliet and Lockport areas," says Ann Skoglund, manager of office operations for Edward Medical Group.

Since the move, the Center welcomed a third primary care physician from Edward Medical Group, Bob William, MD, a family medicine specialist.  He joins Lilia Protaziuk, MD and Sanjeeb Khatua, MD, who are also family medicine physicians.

The Center has an on-site lab, and physical therapy and imaging departments.  Physical therapy helps patients with pain and mobility issues related to orthopedic and neurological conditions.  Imaging offers digital mammography, ultrasound and X-rays.

The Center’s Walk-in Clinic has expanded its hours to meet demand.  Hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-7:30 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.  The Walk-in Clinic is staffed by Edward Medical Group nurse practitioners.

"Just a year ago the Walk-in Clinic was only open weekends, now it's open 76 hours,” says Skoglund.

Joliet resident Freddy Ortiz, 43, and his family have been coming to the Center since its years on Frederick St.  Their experience reflects why the Center's patient satisfaction scores are in the top 1 percent nationally, according to a recent Press Ganey survey.

"The Center still has the same helpful staff it always had,” says Ortiz.  “Now it's even more organized and convenient.  It's been good to have X-ray right there, and I like being able to use the My Chart app on my smart phone to see my medical reports, make appointments or refill subscriptions."

Ortiz is a patient of Dr. Khatua, and credits him with having a major impact on his life.  Dr. Khatua's care of Ortiz includes education about diet and exercise, which helped Ortiz lose 50 pounds, go off blood pressure medications and manage his borderline diabetes.

"Dr. Khatua helped me see a lot of things in a different way, not just about losing weight.  This is partly why I'm changing careers from being an electrician to health care education.  I'm going back to school so I can teach people about eating healthy and taking care of themselves."

Dr. Khatua's approach reflects the practice's philosophy, according to Dr. Protaziuk, who has been on the Center's medical staff since it opened on Frederick St.

“I love family practice because you're caring for the whole family, emphasizing prevention and dealing with a wide variety of problems,” she says.  “This is not just my profession, it's my passion, and I think the patients can feel that."
