ROMEOVILLE, Il (April 16, 2014) – Senior Star at Weber Place, one of the state’s leading organizations in providing stellar dementia resident care, announces today that it is offering the Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT)® for the community at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on April 22 at 605 South Edward Drive.

Through this unique tool, the Senior Star team is able to provide a compelling education regarding the critical needs of those who are living with Alzheimer’s by demonstrating the impairments caused by the disease.  The outcome of this education leads to a better understanding of the disease which leads to more comprehensive care for those who have Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

Led by a team of Senior Star memory care experts, the program creates the most realistic scenario possible utilizing a home-like environment with tools and daily living activities to depict what it is like for someone living with dementia.  Participants are asked to perform tasks in an altered state whereby the VDT® artificially impairs the senses affecting the ability to interpret the environment.  Their reactions to the impaired sensory input lead to behaviors such as wandering, talking to oneself and not following instructions, behaviors often seen in dementia.  Therefore, VDT® is able to illustrate that these behaviors are human behaviors and not specific to dementia, and the actions taken to cope with the impaired senses are very similar to the unpredictable behaviors of individuals with dementia.

“We are so pleased to be able to offer this powerful tool to anyone in the community that is interested in learning more about the behaviors of those living with Alzheimer’s,” said Michelle Franzak, executive director of Senior Star at Weber  Place.  “It is extremely helpful in understanding this terrible disease and learning how to cope and care for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.  We encourage the community to visit us and take the tour – it is an eye-opening experience.”

Each time slot has only 20 openings available.  RSVPs are recommended and will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.  Complementary drinks and appetizers will be provided.

The VDT® is a scientifically proven method designed to increase sensitivity toward those with dementia and is registered through its creator Second Wind Dreams®, a not-for-profit organization that developed the program.
