After Plainfield Fest Success, Foundation Holds Off on River Days

Residents who look forward to the annual riverfront showcase will have to wait until next year.

The Plainfield Riverfront Foundation's annual Plainfield Fest raised $70,000 toward riverfront revitalization efforts, but the organization is putting another fundraiser on hold this year.

Typically held in September, River Days won't return in 2013, according to foundation president Rob Epley.

"We're limited on space right now," Epley said, noting that renovations at the foundation's building in Riverfront Park would interfere with the event. "There's going to be improvements on the property, and it's happening during the time of River Days."

Although River Days isn't happening, one element of the event could still occur: Epley said organizers are working to bring back the popular duck race.

Each year, River Days gives guests a chance to contribute to the Riverfront Foundation by purchasing rubber ducks, which are then released into the DuPage River to "race." The winning ducks net their owners cash prizes.

Epley said it's possible that the duck race could take place during a ribbon-cutting for the new Lockport Street pedestrian bridge. With landscaping and lighting still uncompleted on the bridge project, it's unclear when the official unveiling will happen.

Epley said elements of River Days could also take place during the annual Plainfield Community Homecoming Parade, set for Oct. 5.
