Dense Fog, High Winds Expected Thursday Afternoon, Evening
The dense fog could reduce visibility by less than a quarter-mile. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph.
Over the past 24 hours, the Chicago area has seen snow, ice, rain and then higher temperatures that have melted the snow and left a slushy mess on area roads, driveways and sidewalks.
Next up: a dense fog this afternoon could make travel conditions hazardous and high wind gusts this evening could result in damage to trees, according to the National Weather Service.
A dense fog advisory has been issued until 7 p.m. this evening for Lake, McHenry, DeKalb, Kane, DuPage, Cook, Kendall, Grundy, Will, and Kankakee counties. A high wind warning has been issued from 5 p.m. until 11 p.m. Thursday.
The fog could cause visibility to be less than a quarter-mile during a period this afternoon. Drivers are reminded to slow down, turn on their headlights and provide plenty of space between their vehicle and other vehicles.
While the fog is expected to lift later this afternoon, thunderstorms and strong winds will arrive with a cold front later this afternoon. The NWS is predicting wind gusts up to 60 mph for a period this evening.
The strong winds could make travel dangerous for high-profile vehicles. A high wind warning means sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more could lead to property damage.
Light snow mainly north of Interstate 80 is expected overnight. Area of blowing snow are possible.
