Downtown Parking Lot, Alley Improvements to Begin in Plainfield

The project will start immediately and should be done by the end of the year.

Improvements to municipal parking lots and alleys in downtown Plainfield will start immediately and could be completed by the end of the year, weather permitting, according to the village.

On Monday, trustees awarded a  $727,073 bid to Austin Tyler Construction of Elwood for the project. The company was the lowest of seven bidders.

Improvements will include:

  • The municipal parking lot on Illinois Street and the Plainfield Public Library parking lots on Illinois and Route 59 will be reconfigured into one uniform parking lot. Once complete, improvements will include properly sized parking spaces, drainage, LED lighting, landscaping, and increased access throughout the lot. Work will begin this week with tree removal, concrete demolition, and excavation. Residents are encouraged to use the parking lots on north Des Plaines Street as an alternative during this project. The parking lot on Route 59 will also remain open as long as possible.
  • The alleys north and south of Lockport Street and west of Des Plaines Street (24100 block of Lockport) will be resurfaced.
  • The project also includes the expansion of the north Des Plaines Street Municipal Parking Lot. When complete, this lot will double in size. Lighting and landscaping improvements will also be made to the north Des Plaines parking Lot.
All told, when the work is done, there will be 30 additional parking spaces in downtown Plainfield.
