JJC Offering Free Tax Preparation, Filing on Feb. 8

Joliet Junior College is providing a host site at its Romeoville campus for VITA, the volunteer income tax assistance program offered by the IRS.

Joliet Junior College is providing free electronic tax preparation and filing services on Feb. 8 for anyone who made $52,000 or less in 2013. Here is a news release with the details:

Individuals who earn $52,000 a year or less can get free electronic tax processing and filing at JJC’s Romeoville Campus on Saturday, Feb. 8 through VITA, the volunteer income tax assistance program offered by the IRS.

The program will be held at the JJC Romeoville Campus, 1125 West Romeo Road (West 135th Street) in Romeoville, starting at 9 a.m. with the last appointment accepted at 2:30 p.m.

The college is serving as a host site for the program for the first time, thanks to the efforts of Business Management Professor Wayne Gawlik, the site coordinator for the program.

“I’m pleased that JJC can be a partner in offering the community this valuable service,” said Gawlik. “Those who might otherwise not have access to quality tax filing services can take advantage of this program and not only ensure their taxes are filed accurately but also get the deductions for which they qualify.”

According to the IRS, the VITA program offers free tax help to people who make $52,000 or less and need assistance in preparing their own tax returns. IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing. The volunteers can also inform taxpayers about special tax credits for which they may qualify such as Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.

Participants should bring:

• Photo identification for yourself and spouse

• Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification

notices/cards for you, your spouse, and all dependents

• Birth dates for you, spouse and dependents on the return

• For homeowners, copy of most recent tax bill.

• Copy of last year’s tax return (if possible)
