Learning to Navigate eReaders: A Great Escape

There's nothing like escaping into a good read, and it couldn't be more easy with all of the new portable devices that let you download books.

As a mom myself, I understand the need for a little “me” time. It clears my head and helps me to relax. It also helps me to appreciate my daughter more, and ultimately, to be a better mom when the two of us have our time together.

Each week, “The Great Escape” will be dedicated to giving moms ideas on ways they can take time out for themselves. So go ahead, read on and use this as your excuse to make “the great escape” for your much-deserved break.

The Lockport branch has two NOOKs, the Barnes & Noble eReader device, for participants to use during the class. Staff will also show participants how to download a free e-book to a NOOK and an audio book to an iPhone or iPad.

The Des Plaines Valley Public Library District pays for the “OverDrive” service, which allows all library card holders to check out e-books and audio books free of charge. Anyone with a library card can browse, select and download titles onto their portable devices over the library’s Web site 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The files expire automatically after a seven- to 21-day period, so there’s no need to worry about returns or overdue books.

Registration for the class is recommended. Register by calling the adult services department of the library at 815-838-0755.
