Mark Your Calendar: Memorial Day Parade Starts at 10:30 a.m.

Annual parade gathers at Plainfield Central High School and follows a path to Settlers' Park, where a ceremony will be held.

It wouldn't be Memorial Day without the American Legion's annual parade.

This year, the gathering will begin at 10:30 a.m. at at Fort Beggs Drive and James Street and will proceed to behind , 24401 W. Lockport St.

The official ceremony begins in the park at 11 a.m., with speakers including Plainfield Mayor Michael Collins; the Rev. David Medow, pastor of St. Mary Immaculate Parish; and state Rep. Tom Cross (R-Oswego), according to Marilyn Pecoraro, wife of Plainfield American Legion Marne Post 13 Cmdr. Frank Pecoraro.

The event will require the temporary closing of several streets: James Street from Fort Beggs Drive to Lockport Street; Lockport Street from Route 59 to Van Dyke Road; Main Street from Route 59 to Lockport Street; and Village Center Drive from Lockport Street to Van Dyke Road.

Although last year's parade was mostly a "wash out" because of bad weather, the one in 2009 attracted about 1,000 people, she said. Not everyone walks in the parade -- some prefer to drive directly to Settlers' Park, where there is a large parking lot, she said.

"(The parade) gets bigger and bigger every year," Pecoraro said.

It looks like the weather will cooperate. As of right now, the National Weather Service in Romeoville is predicting a mostly sunny day with a high near 88.
