New Carillon to Put on a Show: Plainfield Church to Host Concerts

Concerts, picnics open to the community.

In April, Plainfield United Methodist Church installed the last five bells needed to make their more than century-old bell tower an official carillon.

Now, the instrument will get the chance to shine during two concerts in June and July.

On Monday, trustees gave the go-ahead for the church, located at 15114 S. Illinois St., to close Chicago Streets between Des Plaines and Illinois streets for concerts on Wednesday, June 25 and Thursday, July 24.

The one-block closure will be in place from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on each day. The church will use the road for tables and chairs for outdoor seating so people can listen to the newly installed carillon.

The concerts are open to the public, and the community is invited to enjoy the events, which will include a picnic and ice cream social, according to the village.

The carillon, which incorporates new bells as well as original bells installed when the church was built in 1907, is one of fewer than 200 in the United States.

"It's nice to be able to show off the carillon," village trustee Bill Lamb said Monday. "It's a nice destination for Plainfield."
