Photos, Video: Relay For Life Returns to Plainfield

The Relay For Life began Saturday afternoon at Plainfield North High School.

For the 15th year, Plainfield-area residents raised money for cancer research and patient resources at the Relay For Life of Plainfield.

The weather held out Saturday as teams — including survivors and caregivers — took to the track at Plainfield North High School, 12005 S. 248th Ave. Because cancer never sleeps, the event lasts throughout the night, and was slated to end at 6 a.m. Sunday.

As of Saturday afternoon, 40 teams had signed up for the event, raising an unofficial total of more than $68,000 — and donations continued to pour in throughout the day.

This year's event was presented by Edward Hospital. Nurse Amy Phalen was the event's featured speaker, saying that in more than 20 years as an oncology nurse, "I have seen more and more survivors.

" ... We are inspired by you," Phalen told those gathered at the June 22 event.
