Emilio was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia in January 2008, when he was just 3 years old. His three-and-a-half-year treatment ended in March.

“Cancer can happen to anyone," Emilio's mother Theresa Ruiz said in a press release on the event. "It is not selective. It does not pick and choose. Please take a moment to think of your family and be appreciative of all the healthy days you have been given.”
