Chicagoland's arctic temperatures on Monday broke records dating back to the 1800s, and we're likely to see a wind chill as low as -50 Monday night.

With a wind chill warning in effect until noon Tuesday, area school districts began calling off school for a second day by late Monday morning.

Shortly after noon, District 202 also made the call, issuing the following notice:

"All District 202 schools and facilities will be closed again on Tuesday, January 7, 2014 because of the severe weather. However, all 12-month employees and principals must report to work if possible. Transportation will not be provided to students attending schools outside of District 202. Please be safe -- stay inside if at all possible."

The Plainfield Public Library also announced it will be closed. Overdue dates will be adjusted to reflect Monday and Tuesday's closures.

So far, here's what's closed:
  • Plainfield Public Library
  • Plainfield District 202
  • Plainfield Park District (all programs/classes closed Tuesday)
  • Grande Park Elementary (Oswego District 308)
  • Montessori of Plainfield
  • Garden Gate Montessori
  • Murphy Junior High (Oswego District 308)
  • Troy School District
  • Minooka School District 201
  • Joliet Grade School District 86
  • Valley View School District
  • Cathedral of St. Raymond School
  • St. Mary Immaculate School
  • Joliet Catholic Academy
  • Lewis University (all suburban and Chicago campuses)
  • University of St. Francis
  • Joliet Junior College (all locations)
  • Richland School District 88A, Crest Hill
Tuesday's high is expected to be 10 degrees, although temperatures aren't likely to get above zero until around noon.

We didn't get mail delivery yesterday and we are on the South end of the Plainfield delivery area. Will delivery resume on Tuesday? Was this an announcement I missed?

Bill, the mail never stops, though if you are on a rural route (if you have a roadside box, you are) you have a responsibility to ensure your box is accessible. If there is no clear path to the box, your carrier make pass you by until there is.

The mail stopped yesterday. My box was clear. I went out in subzero weather and made sure it could be accessed. No mail truck in the area at all yesterday!

We aren't on a rural route either. Even tho the snowplows usually get our neighborhood last the roads were clear. We are a stones throw from LA fitness. I would totally understand but I just would have appreciated a public announcement by the post office if they were curtailing service. I was expecting a package and it is not unusual for us to get mail at 8:30 at night on a normal day.

We live not to far from LA Fitness, no one received mail in our subdivision yesterday.

No mail where I live in northwest Plainfield either.

From the Village page on Facebook - Refuse Collection Update: Waste Management was not able to pick up refuse and recycling today. Due to this week’s severe weather, residents with Monday collection will have refuse picked up on Thursday, January 9; residents with Wednesday collection will have refuse picked up on Friday, January 10; and residents with Thursday collection will have refuse picked up on Saturday, January 11. Please note: recycling will not be picked up this week. We appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation, normal service will resume next week.
