Plainfield Daughter Honors Dad with Sub Fundraiser

Kathy Petrak and her dad savored subs as he struggled with pulmonary fibrosis, and now this event will raise money to find a cure.

The fundraiser is the brainchild of Plainfield’s Kathy Petrak, whose father struggled with pulmonary fibrosis. Petrak and her father were devoted Jersey Mike’s Subs fans. While her father was in a North Carolina hospital fighting the lung disease, she would bring in Jersey Mike’s subs they could munch on together.

On June 6, all Jersey Mike’s Subs locations in the Chicago area will be part of the fundraiser for the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation. Addresses for all 20 participating stores are listed on the flier and the foundation's Web site, http://www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org/

Since losing her father in March 2009, Petrak has become a strong advocate for pulmonary fibrosis awareness. Organizing fundraisers like the one with Jersey Mike’s is a way not only to honor the memory of her father, but to fight the disease that robbed him of his life, she said.

Last summer, she arranged a pulmonary fibrosis awareness night during a Chicago White Sox baseball game, which provided more than 50 patients and family members with a night at the ball park.

“We feel strongly that we must educate our community in order to find a cure for this ugly disease,” Petrak said.

Mark Cross, the Naperville Jersey Mike’s store owner, signed on to host a fundraiser and then upped his ante. He recruited all 20 Chicago Jersey Mike’s locations.

In addition to the Naperville store and the one in Plainfield at 13400 S. Route 59, the stores  in Aurora, Chicago, Crystal Lake, Elmhurst, Geneva, Glenview, Gurnee, Lake in the Hills, Lisle, Lombard, Mount Prospect, Naperville, Niles, Schaumburg, St. Charles, Tinley Park, Vernon Hills and Wheaton are also participating.

“Jersey Mike’s is not only dedicated to customer service, but also dedicated to giving back,” Cross said. “We are honored to have the opportunity to participate in this fundraiser, as Kathy and her father were not only loyal customers; they were
part of the Jersey Mike’s family.”
