Rain Washes Out Cemetery Walk

Slippery, wet conditions postpone event to Sept. 25. Organizers discussing alternative spots if is rain an issue next weekend.

In the movies, a cold, wet, dreary setting make for a perfect cemetery walk.

However, for the Plainfield Historical Society, Sunday's slippery conditions factored into the decision to cancel.

Citing safety concern for the cast, audience, and everyone involved with the Plainfield Historical Society Cemetery Walk 2011, publicity chairperson Linda Keene said the weather conditions simply were too dangerous to go on with the show.

“We made a decision at 9 a.m. to cancel the event after looking at the radar,” Keene said. “All we saw was rain and more rain.”

The walk is now set to take place at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Plainfield Township Cemetery, Route 59 and Fort Beggs Drive.

Due to the nature of the walk and need to move to six different sites in the historic section of the cemetery, the slippery grass potentially posed a big problem for organizers.

With a perfect backdrop on Saturday, the Historical Society spent all day working to setup the props and tents needed for the presentation only to come back less than 24-hours later to take everything down.

The historical society is working on potential alternative sites for next Sunday should rain again be a factor. All future information about the walk can be found at plainfieldhistoricalsociety.blogspot.com.

Advance tickets are $10 and available through Saturday at the , 15025 S. Illinois St., and the historical society’s , 23836 W. Main St. (on Route 126, east of Route 59). All tickets from this Sunday’s event will be accepted at the times indicated on the ticket.

Tickets at the gate are $15.

The cemetery, one of the few township cemeteries in the state, was established in 1835. Some of Plainfield’s first cabin pioneers are buried there.

Proceeds from the event will go toward historical society programs and maintaining the Main Street Museum and EJ&E Depot No. 4 Museum, near Plainfield Village Hall.
