Suddenly Summer: Hot Tuesday Temps Set Record

The previous record of 89 was set in 1896, according to meteorologist Tom Skilling.

Chances are you didn't realize it, but when you woke to sunshine and warm temperatures Tuesday morning, you were also witnessing history.

As temperatures raced through the 80s and peaked at 91 degrees in Joliet Tuesday afternoon, the record that had been set on May 10, 1896 -- 89 degrees -- was being broken, according to WGN-TV meteorologist Tom Skilling's Chicago Weather Center

Interestingly, a breeze off Lake Michigan kept temperatures almost 25 degrees lower in downtown Chicago, which reached a high of 76 on Tuesday, Skilling reported.

We're still in for unseasonably warm weather for the rest of the week, but nowhere near the temperatures we hit on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Romeoville. Their forecast calls for highs of about 83-84 on Wednesday and Thursday before dropping to a high of 77 on Friday.

There's a 40 to 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms on all three days, the report said.
