Tips to Save Money, Help Environment at Green Village Program

Want to reduce the amount of water and electricity used in and around your home while saving money and helping the environment?

Several easy and practical examples will be discussed at the Green Village Lecture Series program, being held at 7 p.m. Monday at the .

Rain barrels and rain gardens are two great ways to save water for such uses as watering a backyard vegetable or flower garden and irrigating home landscapes. And rain gardens help infiltrate rainwater back into the ground, reducing the volume of stormwater runoff that is diverted to local rivers. Conservation Plainfield is kicking off a rain barrel sales program.

At the Green Village event, presenters will demonstrate how to set up and use a rain barrel at your home and will provide examples of successful rain gardens.

A portion of the program will also be devoted to providing an overview of a new energy conservation effort – CUB Energy Saver – that was recently launched by the Village of Plainfield and the Citizens Utility Board (CUB).

The program allows residents to sign up for an online program to follow your actual electricity usage (based on your ComEd account), track power savings based on adopting tips and practices recommended by CUB, and earn points to be redeemed at local businesses for the electricity you’ve saved.

The Green Village Lecture Series is a partnership between the and the Plainfield Public Library District to host monthly workshops with an environmental focus. Events are held the second Monday of each month, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Plainfield Public Library.
