Willis Tower Loses Tallest Building Status

One World Trade Center in New York City officially claims the title Tuesday.

First its name got changed, now its claim to fame is gone, too.

The Willis Tower, née Sears, lost its bragging rights as the country’s tallest building Tuesday when the Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat announced that New York City’s One World Trade Center now carries that title, according to the Chicago Tribune. The NYC skyscraper’s symbolic 1,776 feet put it above the Willis Tower’s 1,451 feet.

The decision comes after a 3.5-hour meeting Friday of the council’s height committee, the Tribune says.

At issue, according to Crain’s Chicago Business, was whether the needle on top of One World Trade Center is a spire or an antenna. Spires are included as part of a building’s height but antenna are not.

Are you sad to see Chicago lose its title as home to the country’s tallest building?
