Bee Documentary Kicks Off Green Series 2012

The documentary explores the mystery of why honey bees are disappearing and the effect it could have on the food supply, a topic to be discussed in depth this year.

Vanishing of the Bees, a documentary on the gradual disappearance of honey bees and the dramatic effect it could have on the food supply, will be shown Feb. 13 at the next Green Village lecture series.

The film is a kick-off to the series 2012 theme: the "Year of the Bee," in which all of the lectures presented during the upcoming year will have a bee theme. The movie will be shown at 7 p.m. at the .

Honey bees are responsible for pollinating a third of the food consumed in the world, yet the bees have been mysteriously vanishing across the planet, according to a media release about the movie and the lecture series. The phenomenon is known as "colony collapse disorder."

"The documentary exposes the crisis through the story of two friends and commercial beekeepers as they struggle to protect their bees and press for a solution to this alarming and under-reported problem," the release said.
