Suggested hed: Plainfield history trivia night this Tuesday

Suggested subhed: Eighth annual historical society competition located at Back Door Pub

PLAINFIELD - Name four types of weapons gathered by settlers at Fort Beggs.

Who were the first families that settled at Walker’s Grove?

What was the name of the hotel that operated for the longest time in downtown Plainfield?

If these questions get your curiosity perking, you’ll want to put next Tuesday’s eighth annual Plainfield history trivia contest on your planner.

These stumpers were among those questions contestants faced last year at the Plainfield Historical Society’s annual trivia night. If you think you stand a chance at this year’s local history questions, join the cluster of contestants at the Back Door Pub next week.

You don’t need plan ahead to get a partner. Last year’s winners didn’t come together as a team until they arrived.

“Last year’s winning team were walk-ins,” said Sue Hasenyager, a former Plainfield teacher and historical society volunteer.

Every team got some right answers just by using skills cultivated in third grade – taking a wild guess. Contestants scratched their heads to scrawl answers about Plainfield businesses and the earliest Plainfield families.

Guns, sticks, axes, hatchets, scythes and pitchforks were good answers to the Fort Beggs question. Bows and arrows were not.

The Plainfield Historical Society’s eighth annual trivia contest is at 7 p.m. Tuesday April 3 at the Back Door Pub, 15014 S. Des Plaines Street.
