Plainfield Student's Work Part of North Central College Exhibit

Works of four North Central College students are featured in the monthlong “Autumn Student Art Exhibit.”

The exhibit includes paintings, drawings and sculptures created by sophomore Lauren Denler of Homer Glen, junior Nicole “CoCo” Digweed of Plainfield and seniors Liz Halbmaier of Burlington and LeAnn Spitzer of Rockford. The exhibit runs Nov. 1 through Nov. 27 in the Meiley-Swallow Hall Gallery, 31 S. Ellsworth St. An artist reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10; complimentary refreshments will be served.

Inspired by emotion the artists collaborate and work with many different mediums to portray their views on feminism, politics and human nature.

Denler is double majoring in studio art and art history with minors in Spanish and global studies. She participates in North Central’s College Scholars Honors Program and the Capture Photo Club. Her work has been featured in a Lemont Artist’s Guild show and at the Paramount Theatre in Aurora. Her contributions to “Autumn Student Art Exhibit” showcase feminism with mediums such as acrylic paints and tech pens to create gestured lines and depth.

Digweed is a third-year chemistry major who spends her time outside of labs taking courses in art, German, and mathematics. She plans to pursue graduate studies in chemical engineering. She says she wants never to lose the perspectives that being an artist has on science, and similarly, the potential material and methodology of the sciences applied to art.

Halbmaier is double majoring in marketing and entrepreneurship and small business management with a minor in studio art. At North Central she is a mentor to first-year students, student ambassador and president of the student American Marketing Association chapter. She plans to pursue a career in corporate marketing or higher education administration.

Spitzer is majoring in studio art with a minor in art history. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in studio art, and her work has been featured at Rock Valley College. For this exhibit she uses ceramics to explore such topics as politics, society and world pollution.

Art students at North Central College learn traditional and contemporary media; engage in analytical, critical and abstract thinking; and learn to communicate ideas visually. Students attend gallery and museum openings and exhibits in Naperville and Chicago, meet visiting artists, enter juried exhibitions and gain an academic foundation for graduate study in studio art, art education, art history, art therapy, arts administration, art criticism and visual communications.
