NEW LENOX – You can call Bryan Chavez the dish master.

The Joliet Catholic Academy senior passed out three assists Monday afternoon as the Hilltoppers evened up their record at 5-5-1 with a 4-1 nonconference boys soccer victory over Providence Catholic.

Shorewood natives Cody Vercellotti, Jamieson Jamnik and Nick Legare and Plainfield product Tommy Paige also scored goals for JCA, which trailed 1-0. The Hillmen scored four unanswered goals in the second half.

“We didn’t start the game well in that we turned the ball over a lot and we were really outworked,” JCA coach Tom Cranmer said. “Because of that lack of execution, we gave up a goal to start the game.

“We regained our composure and started connecting better, working up the field toward their net. In the second half, we came out really focused on regaining the lead and not being outworked.”

Cranmer credited the play of Chavez and Legare in the second half, which featured the Hillmen scoring on three headers.

“Bryan and Nick played particularly well in the second half,” Cranmer said. “They provided many dangerous passes and runs toward Providence’s goal by taking over and controlling the middle of the field.

“I also was pleased to see us winning headers in the opponent’s penalty area, which we have struggled to do lately.”
