Walking Your Way to Health

Learn about benefits of walking and opportunities to walk with like minded individuals through the HealthSource of Plainfield Walking Club!

Most people think you need to join a gym to get a good workout, but in reality, all you need to do is go outside.  Walking is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to get healthy.  The health benefits of walking are numerous and can help lower you LDL (bad cholesterol), increase your HDL (good cholesterol), manage your weight and help fight type two diabetes.

Although walking is inexpensive and does not require practice, there are a few things people must remember:

  • Wearing proper shoes is one of the biggest factors when walking.  You want to make sure your wear gym shoes that fit properly and have proper arch support.
  • It is important to wear proper clothing.  Wear clothes appropiate for the weather and make sure to remember your body temperature will increase when walking, so dressing in layers may be your best choice so you can accomodate multiple temperature variations.
  • Always treat walking like any other form of exercise.  It is important to warm up and cool down when walking.  You can do that by doing stretches before and after you walk and start out and end walking at a slower pace.
  • Always bring water with you.  Staying hydrated is key to having a successful walk.
