Plainfield Shoppers -- Watch Out for Added Credit Card 'Checkout Fee'

If you shop with a credit card, merchants and retailers can now charge you a 4 percent "checkout" fee in 40 states, including Illinois.

Plainfield shoppers, beware: As of Sunday, anyone who pays with a credit card may be charged a new 4 percent added "checkout fee." The fee is legal in 40 states, including Illinois.

The fee is the result of a settlement between announced last summer between credit card companies and major banks to "fix credit card processing fees with merchants."

Retailers can now charge credit card users 1.5 percent to 4 percent of their total bill to cover processing costs to credit card companies.

For more than a decade, the banks and credit card companies worked feverishly to change consumer spending habits away from cash and checks to credit cards. Now that we are all 'retrained" to use our plastic, it appears the legislators (Durbin and friends) and the Retail industry are working to punish us for doing what they wanted in the first place. For concerned consumers, however, it should be noted this fee does not apply when using a debit card (entering you pin number). In this ultra-competitive marketplace and struggling economy, it will be a very bold move by any business who attempts to actually charge consumers an additional fee for using a credit card. Personally, I will not pay an extra fees unless there are absolutely no other options. i dare any local business to try and add a fee to my purchase price. I will gladly hand back any merchandise and void the sale immediately. A sign on the door or register counter indicating an impending credit card fee might as well just say 'Do Not Shop Here".

Jim, I am 100 percent in agreement with your statement. I would do exactly as you said and let the business know that not only will I not pay the fee, I would let them know that I will be shopping elsewhere. Any business that tacks on an added fee, in my opinion, will not be in business long. There is hardly anything that I buy that I cannot get somewhere else, at the same or cheaper price, and that is where my business will go. I hope that the merchants in Plainfield understand that it will cost them more money than they will get by charging that fee. Any business that reads The Patch should understand the consequences of their actions.

Its not the business that should pay for your convenience of using that card. 2 to4 percent of every sale goes to the cc companies from the retail sale. Bet u didnt know that. So not only are these credit card companies benefiting from your intreset on the oustanding balance but also get a cut of every sale on the card. This is the credit card companies we should be mad at here.

I will not be shopping anywhere that charges this ridiculous fee! Another way to screw us the "American" way!

This puts a small business between a rock and a hard place. Certainly they don't want to have loyal customers incur additional fees, but the credit card companies gauge the small businesses, many of which are struggling to survive. That extra 4% means a lot to them. It is the banks and credit card companies that deserve our fury, not the poor mom and pop shops trying to survive. I mean look around--- empty spaces everywhere in malls and strip malls today! You should be trying to support small local businesses, not crucifying them for trying to survive in a very tough, highly taxed-- economy. Do your local businesses and in turn your community a favor and shop with cash whenever possible! That's what I am going to try to do. Support Small Business people! They help our local economy!!!!

@Gina while I agree with your sentiments, we cannot directly impact the banks, only the business owners. Is it unfair, you bet it is, but unless you can afford to use cash and not use plastic, or cancel your credit card entirely, it will fall on small business to absorb these extra charges. It is the nature of the beast whereas the small business owner has nowhere to turn, they either don't charge the extra fee, so their profit margin will be smaller,or charge it and lose business. Remember, conglomerates like Wal Mart, Target, Meijer, et al can still underprice them, so their future is grim indeed. We seem to have gotten the government that cares nothing about individuals, and protects large business at their expense. Amazing, this on top of bailing them out and allowing them to survive, so what are they allowed to do, dole out large bonuses to themselves and pay for it by thumbing their noses at the individual small business owners.
