Construction Under Way on Plainfield Tennis Facility

Club could open by Jan. 1, 2014.

Construction has begun on a 40,000-square-foot tennis facility on Normantown Road south of 119th Street, and the members-only club will be open by the new year, according to the owners.

"We're pouring foundation this week," Five Star Tennis Center co-owner Robin Henders said. "We're pretty far along [with construction]," he added, noting a groundbreaking ceremony took place last weekend.

The hard-court facility will include five tennis courts, a pro shop, lounge and check-in desk — plus room to expand.

"We have enough room for 11 courts," said Henders. "It gives us the chance for room to grow in Plainfield." Henders said the additional courts could be completed in as little as two years, along with the facility's second floor.

Henders, a Plainfield resident, said there is a need for a tennis club in the village.

"I do know there's a pretty good population already," he said. "It's a family sport and there's a lot of young families moving into Plainfield right now."

Henders said the club will host tennis clinics, and noted that the business plans to set up a not-for-profit to introduce tennis to non-members.
