Former Plainfield Barnes & Noble Still Vacant

No Trader Joe's? The property owner said he's in talks with several potential tenants for the Route 59 location.

More than six months after the Plainfield Barnes & Noble closed its doors, the Route 59 storefront remains empty.

Edwards Realty Co., which owns the site, is still in talks with a few potential tenants, according to Vice President Ramzi Hassan. The former bookstore is located at 12700 S. Route 59 in the Kensington Center development.

Last December, Hassan said his company was "courting" much-coveted retailer Trader Joe's for the site. While Hassan still won't rule out the possibility of the grocer coming to Plainfield, it doesn't look promising: the village does not appear on a "coming soon" list on the Trader Joe's website. The retailer does list two Illinois soon-to-open locations in Libertyville and Evanston.

"Nothing is ruled out," Hassan said when asked about whether talks are still possible with Trader Joe's.

"Unfortunately, there are no updates at this time," Hassan added. "We're trying to work with a few different tenants."

He said several different big-box stores are also considering leasing the site — but it could take a while before a new tenant moves in.

"With some of the larger corporations ... things take time," Hassan said.
