Uptown's 9/11 Event to Benefit Basic Family

The second annual event, co-sponsored by the American Knights DuPage Motorcycle Club, also pays tribute to servicemen and women.

Those who put their lives on the line for others will be honored Saturday at the second annual Remember the Fallen Fundraiser at , 24035 Lockport St., in downtown Plainfield.

The American Knights DuPage Motorcycle Club, whose members include law enforcement personnel along with civilians devoted to safe motorcycling and helping the needy, and Uptown co-owner Jason Gruben joined forces last year to create an event honoring service people to be held annually the Saturday before the anniversary of 9/11.

This year’s event also will honor , a Plainfield resident and Bolingbrook police officer who died in a single-car crash in January, leaving behind a wife and daughter.

“A year ago we decided to do something to benefit fallen police officers, firemen and other servicemen,” Gruben said. “We call it Remember the Fallen because of what happened Sept. 11 and for what happens daily in war.”

The fundraiser will be from 6 to 10 p.m.

Tickets cost $20 and include all-you-can-eat pork, baked beans with seared pork belly, coleslaw and chips.

A 50/50 cash drawing will be held every hour, with half going to a winner and half to the Remember the Fallen Fund. This year’s funds will go to the Basic family. Last year’s proceeds went to Gold Star Mothers and efforts to provide toiletries and other items to troops overseas.

Remember the Fallen is only one of the many ways the American Knights DuPage Motorcycle Club supports the service community. The club participates in Wounded Warrior rides, parties for veterans and returning troops, memorial rides for fallen officers and other events.

“We also have an ongoing collection for troops overseas,” said Richard “Cutter” Wayne, a charter member of the club, a Vietnam veteran and Bolingbrook resident. “We want to make people conscious of the hardships and sacrifices our service people make. They need help and understanding.”

Some 350 people are expected to attend Saturday’s event.

“If people want to come to the door and get a ticket or make a donation they are more than welcome,” Gruben said.

Entertainers have donated their time for the fundraiser, which will feature a DJ from Gabe Ortiz’s Go 4 It Entertainment and the band Junkyard Groove.

All day and night Uptown will have for sale $1 drafts and $2 mixed-drink specials.

Motorcyclists can park in a secured area designated at Lockport Street and Route 59.
