Have a ‘Spooktacular’ Saturday in Plainfield

Plenty of fun on tap for annual downtown Halloween celebration.

Whether you’re looking to snag some scary deals or entertain your young goblins and ghouls, there’s plenty to do in downtown Plainfield this weekend.

MainStreet Plainfield will host its annual “Spooktacular Downtown Plainfield” event all day Saturday, with activities for adults and kids alike.

Here’s a roundup of what’s happening:

  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: The first 700 kids to arrive can pick up their free trick-or-treating bags and then follow the orange and green plastic pumpkins and signs to 36 participating shops to collect candy (and their parents can snap up some deals). Click here for a list of participating stores. Parents can also enjoy a “mystery word” game, collecting clues at each business to solve the phrase. The first mom and dad to get it right will win $10 in MainStreet dollars.
  • 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Sigler Family Eye Care will award a prize to whoever can guess how many eyeballs are in a jar.
  • 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Plainfield Public Library will offer Halloween crafts.
  • 11 a.m.: Up to three winners can score prizes worth up to $25 in the Main Street Candy & Toys raffle. Winners will be announced at 1 p.m. The first 50 kids to arrive will receive a “master spook bag” with goodies and treats.
  • 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Top Reviews Salon will offer “Bootiful Spooky Sprays” hair color for $5 per strand, while supplies last.
  • 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. : Get your free pumpkins while supplies last at Century 21
  • 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Acorn Portraits will have a kids costume photo booth to capture Halloween memories.
  • 1 to 4 p.m.: MainStreet will host a family fun area with a Halloween jumpy (weather permitting), face painting and fantasy hair, plus coloring and Halloween hairdos by Boozle B’s. Admission is a $5 per child donation.
  • 2 to 7 p.m.: Make your own spooktacular sundae at Gourmet Junction
  • 2 p.m., 4 p.m., 6 p.m.: Decorate a spooky cookie house ($24.95 each) at Cathy’s Sweet Creations. Reservations required; call 815-577-9660.
  • 4 to 8 p.m.: Enjoy hayrack rides for a $1 cash donation or one can of food for the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry. Rides are at the corner of Lockport and DesPlaines streets.
  • 10 p.m.: Moe Joe’s annual Halloween bash features a live DJ, prizes and a costume contest.
  • All day: Kids can turn their coloring contest entries in at all participating businesses; prize winners will be called for pick-up on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Cathy’s Sweet Creations.
