Hurray For Sod: Beginning of the End for Route 59 Road Work

Workers putting in grass along some Route 59 medians signals that the end of construction work is now within sight.

They were laying sod along some of the Route 59 medians today.

That's nice, you say. Yawn. Are you really going to waste your time writing about this? Indeed, I am, my friends, because as most of longtime observers of road contruction can tell you, the start of landscaping can mean only one thing: a project is nearing completion.

Can I get a Hallejlujah?

I've lived in this area since 1997, and I think one stretch of Route 59 or another has been under construction for the entire time. That said, I am not complaining: I remember a two-lane Route 59 very well and I have no problem waiting a while longer to experience the joys of a four-lane road complete with -- drum roll -- center turn lanes. Folks who live north of downtown know exactly what I'm talking about.

As I stopped to snap a few pictures today, I suspect the landscapers thought I was a bit nuts. I don't care. For them it was just another day at work. For me, it was the thing I've been watching for all summer.

Of course, they're still pouring curbs and installing sidewalks further north, so don't break out champagne just yet. But, as they say, be thankful for little things.
