Meet Blackhawks Great Denis Savard, Jim Cornelison Saturday in Plainfield

The Chicago Blackhawks tenor and former player will be at the Penalty Box for Saturday night's faceoff against the St. Louis Blues.

It’s been a good year for Chicago Blackhawks fans as they’ve watched their team skate to the best record in the NHL after starting the season with a record-breaking winning streak.

And it's about to get better for Plainfield-area fans: Hockey enthusiasts are invited to stop by The Penalty Box Bar and Grill, 16108 S. Route 59, for a chance to meet former Chicago Blackhawk Denis Savard as the Hawks take on the St. Louis Blues in one of their final regular-season games.

Beloved Blackhawks crooner Jim Cornelison will also be on hand for the game, and is set to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” at 7 p.m. (No word on whether he’ll be showing off his glass-shattering skills, seen in the embedded YouTube video during a performance of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.")

Penalty Box manager Mike Magers said both Savard, who played for the Hawks from 1980-89 and 1996-97, and Cornelison are scheduled to be at the Plainfield bar for the duration of Saturday’s game against the Blues.

Magers said hockey fans have been flocking to The Penalty Box all season long, and the bar is going all out to celebrate the Hawks’ stellar season.

“We’ve exceeded our expectations during the season,” Magers said. “We have the lights and the train horn and everything” when the team scores a goal, he added. “It’s been very well received.”

And the Blackhawks have taken note, he added. “They’ve made us an official roadwatch bar,” Magers said.

According to Magers, The Penalty Box is expecting a crowd on Saturday, and is opening up neighboring Live 59 to make room for patrons.

The bar and grill will offer $10 Bud Light and Miller Lite buckets for the occasion, which will also include an appearance by the Chicago Blackhawks Ice Girls and a live remote for WSCR 670 The Score radio station.
