A nut-free bakery will open by the end of March in Plainfield, according to the Facebook page for Callie's Cuties Bake Shop.

The bakery will open near La Dolce Vita Italian restaurant at 16108 S. Route 59, bringing fresh-baked treats to everyone, including nut allergy sufferers.

According to the Callie's Cuties website, owner Laura Meehan was inspired to open the business after a terrifying near miss with daughter Callie, then just 2 years old.

"In November, 2005 my husband Tom and I almost lost our precious daughter Callie to an allergy of cashews – a simple tree nut. "It didn’t take an entire bag of cashews, just two tiny nuts ...  To this day, 8 years later, I still cannot think of the incident without crying. Thanks to Benedryl and the Plainfield Paramedics – Callie is still here with us today," Meehan writes on the site.

Other new businesses

Village Planner Michael Garrigan said another new business El Molcajete Mexican restaurant, recently opened at 15932 S. Lincoln Highway. The site was previously home to Mariachi Grill and, before that, Just Judi's hot dogs.

Coming soon to Plainfield, according to the village website:
  • Jannat Indo/Pak Grocery & Meat, 12443 S. Route 59
  • Marco's Pizza, Route 30 & 143d Street

Amigo's, I love the smell of Burrito flatulence in the evening. Don't light a match.

Are there odds on the place on rte 30? It was also a lindys chili along w just Jodi and Mariah grill. Nothing can stay in that location.

It is my belief that rte 30, though heavily driven, needs to be cleaned up a bit between Renwick and the car dealers. Renovations to the strip mall areas that the stores occupy would encourage more people to stop by or nicer signage advertising these places along the street can help. Nicer curb appeal will attract more people.

Been saying that for years. The village needs to work with the owners making sure they are keeping up the property and not direct businesses that they don't want downtown to rt 30. Hopefully the reconstruction of rt 30 will help. Anyone know what became of the mall that was to be built on the old truck stop site. Please don't blame Bush.

To add to that how about the old Plainfield Motel? That has been sitting for a couple years now since they tore down the burned building. I don't even think anyone occupys the couple houses on the property.
