Ready to Rock: Music School to Open in Downtown Plainfield

School of Rock will host a grand opening this spring.

Budding rock stars will get the chance to work with experienced musicians when School of Rock opens this spring in Plainfield.

Owner Jason Fein said a grand opening for the music school is tentatively scheduled for early May.

Opening up shop in the historic Steiner building at 24026 W. Lockport St., School of Rock will give kids the chance to perform live rock shows.

“Basically, we get these kids up on stage,” said Fein. “We put on six legitimate rock shows per year.”

Students will also get experience playing a range of musical styles, from grunge to metal to punk, he added. “We change it up and the kids learn a new style of music,” said Fein. “It also teaches the kids about the history of music.”

School of Rock offers weekly private instruction for students ages 7 to 18, along with a weekly group session. The “little wing” program serves little rockers ages 3-5.

A “Rock 101” program is available for novice musicians, but Fein said all students will get the experience of playing live onstage.

“Believe it or not, we can get them onstage within a few months,” he said.

Fein, who is lead singer of Chicagoland punk band The Run Around, said students will get to work with real rock musicians as they learn the tricks of the trade.

“We’re not some corporate big-wigs coming in and starting a school,” he said. “This is what we love to do.”

Fein said he was the general manager at the Naperville School of Rock for two years before deciding to open in Plainfield.

“We found this building and we loved it,” he said of the downtown Plainfield location. “It’s a quaint atmosphere and it’s really neat. We just wanted to be a part of that.”

Fein said School of Rock, which has locations all over the country, wants to put down roots in Plainfield.

“What we want the neighborhood to know is, we’re not going to go anywhere,” he said. “We’re going to spend the time to grow the business and grow the downtown area.”
