Owner: CrossFit Plainfield Offers 'Intense and Awesome Workout'

CrossFit Plainfield, owned by Scott Romijn, opened in January on Center Street.

A new exercise facility opened this year in Plainfield, offering people a chance to run faster, feel more confident, become more flexible and do more pushups than they had ever thought was possible.

Trainers at CrossFit Plainfield also say that when people work out at their gym, they are not judged or treated like an outsider, and everyone is friendly and supportive. Before long, they said, patrons start checking the gym’s website to see what the “workout of the day” is to mentally prepare themselves for the next challenges.

Located at 14903 Center St., Suite 104, CrossFit Plainfield is owned by Scott Romijn, who recently talked to Patch about the new gym.

What is the Cross Fit workout?

CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program that involves constantly varied, high intensity, functional movements. The workout involves a mixture of exercises designed to develop cardiovascular and respiratory endurance, stamina, flexibility, power, strength, speed, coordination, agility, balance and accuracy.

What sets CrossFit Plainfield apart from other exercise facilities or gyms in the area?

There are no machines at CrossFit. The workouts are run eight times per day so there is usually a convenient time for everyone to get their workout in. Every day is a different workout. We work on skills that we are good at and bad at. We don't avoid things. We encourage people to try things and achieve things that they never thought possible, like climbing a 12-foot rope. We become a support system for each other. At our facility, we like to say routine is the enemy — you just never know what you're going to get until you walk in the door, and that's what keeps people coming back for more.

Who benefits from the CrossFit workout?

Everyone can benefit from the CrossFit workout, from the young to the elderly, fit to the unfit. The program is designed to be scaled by load and intensity. Everyone can do the same workout, sometimes we just have to modify. If someone is injured, we will change the workout to meet their needs — also known as a MOD WOD.  There is no one that cannot benefit from CrossFit, whether it be for weight loss, strength training, self healing, improving time and performance in athletic sports/events, or even job performance (police, fire, military).

What type of personalized attention or training does CrossFit Plainfield offer?

Classes are run in small group settings, about 12 students per class, taught by trained coaches. The coaches help athletes set goals and make plans to meet them. Members of the class also hold each other accountable and help themselves strive to reach their goals.

Beside exercise and fitness advice, what other services does CrossFit Plainfield offer?

We try to offer our athletes advice on how to live an overall healthy lifestyle and do offer advice on how to choose healthier foods and even work with a local caterer for healthy meal options.

We have members go through a four-class introductory series. The classes are free, and people can make an appointment with one of the coaches to attend one of these classes. They will learn many of the basic movements we perform in our workouts, as well as get a chance to do a small workout at the end of each session. Most questions about CrossFit and how our box works are answered during these sessions.

We have a website, www.crossfitplainfield.com, or they can call (630) 664-4400, to schedule their first intro class.

Is there anything else people should know about CrossFit Plainfield?

No matter what we say, you have to come in and try it for yourself. This is for everyone. The biggest excuse we hear from people is that they want to be in shape before they come in the door. No matter how good of shape you are in, you are going to have the most intense and awesome workout of your life!
