Local shop owner deals with Alzheimer's while continuing a Plainfield Tradition

Mary Ann Waldorf is no stranger to adversity. She survived the trauma of the Plainfield tornado in 1990 when she was (mistakenly) told that her husband, Jim, then the principal of Plainfield High School, had died in the tornado.  In order to help rebuild Plainfield, she and Jim decided to open Gourmet Junction in 1993. When Jim ran (successfully) for mayor, she survived a very contentious political campaign.  She even survived the Lockport Street construction project that put many of Plainfield’s oldest establishments out of business. Jim’s recent diagnosis of Alzheimer’s has been the biggest challenge she has ever faced.  But through it all, Mary Ann has maintained a positive and optimistic outlook.

Her shop reflects that outlook.  The Gourmet Junction continues to be a charming place to shop. The ambience of the 100+ year old building is enhanced by the wonderful and unique gift items available there.  It is amazing how such a small shop can house such a wide variety of items – from jewelry, purses and accessories to seasonal décor. It also has one of the best selections of gourmet foods, coffees, teas and tea accessories you will find anywhere. And we mustn’t forget the many angels and angel-themed gifts that give the place its theme … and its name.

It is the Angel Tea Shop, reminiscent of European tea rooms, that makes this place a standout. Patrons are invited to sit down at one of the tables placed through the shop, and enjoy a cup of cappuccino and a muffin in the morning, lunch at noon, high tea in the late afternoon or an ice cream cone with the kids.  Food is lovingly prepared by Mary Ann on the premises and served with an attention to detail not found in chain restaurants. Patrons are invited to sit, relax and enjoy the atmosphere. There is nothing hurried here.

Mary Ann also offers box lunches and catering to businesses and other patrons. Her delightful sandwiches and salads are a wonderful alternative to “fast food.”  It is not unusual to see attendees at the library’s Lunch and Learns nibbling on one of Mary Ann’s sandwiches.

If all of that was not enough, Mary Ann also fashions beautiful gift baskets. Customers can special order themed baskets, and even add promotional items to them, or they can choose one already made up, featuring some of the best items her shop has to offer.

With all of the challenges she has faced, it is amazing that this charming shop has survived.  When asked how she does it, Mary Ann wonders if it could be all of the Angels in her shop looking over her.

During this Christmas season, Mary Ann invites people to stop by her shop at 24030 Lockport Street, Plainfield, Illinois, (815) 439-3933, to see the many unique gift offerings – or just take a few minutes to enjoy a cup of tea of coffee.  Also check out her newly redesigned website at http://www.gourmetjunction.net.
