Blog: TV Spin on Health Care - Who to Believe?

This is one of the most polarizing issues facing our nation; what is even more so is how the news about it is being reported.

The Supreme Court has just ruled, striking down what many believe is the most integral part of The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, better known as ObamaCare, the individual mandate.

At least, that is the telling according to some. Others are trumpeting that ObamaCare has passed the Constitutional litmus test and Obama has been vindicated.

So what is the truth?

In this day and age of instant and immediate 24/7/365 news feeds, it may take a while to sort out what has actually been decided, much less what it means to individual Americans. If nothing else, how each news outlet reports this will be clear and concise proof of that source’s bias.

Those who are proclaiming a 5-4 vote allowing much of the act to stand, and referring to wording that says the Individual Mandate, the most controversial piece of the legislation is not in essence unconstitutional will be showing their Obama colors.

Those who are stating the Supreme Court has defeated the act, citing some of the verbiage of the decision that says requiring individuals to buy health insurance is unconstitutional and therefore proof that Obama will be a one term President are claiming their impending victory in November.

How can it be that both sides can look at the same thing, yet report it so completely in their favor, using direct quotes from the still unreleased full decision as support of their position?

Quite simply, this is the definition of spin.

The truth is simply that the court has ruled that the idea of a mandate requiring individuals to buy health insurance is unconstitutional, but that the mandate can stay as it is under Congress’ power to collect taxes.

What this all means, politically and to each of us personally has yet to be understood, primarily because the full decision, with a synopsis, has yet to be published. As I’m writing this, the court is still in session and the decision is still to be read. There will be a decision of the whole court, then each justice will lay out his or her brief, or reasonings for their vote on the decision. Then and only then will we know the full scope, meaning and effect of the ruling, as well as which side can truly claim victory.

The true losers in all this, regardless what the decision says, are we the people. Not because specific portions of The Patient Rights and Affordable Health Care Act will either be upheld or struck down. Simply because to get the truth of it all, to understand it all, we will not be able to trust the media.

Then again, depending on that news sources’ headlines over the next hours and days will tell us, based on our own biases, which ones to read, listen to and believe. As long as no one is deluded into thinking that the source that supports their already firmly held beliefs is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

As of this writing, the site is not yet updated with this decision, but this is the home page for the Supreme Court - http://www.supremecourt.gov/

The synopsis of each of the rulings is surprisingly readable and straightforward; the full decision and individual justice’s comments are both full of references to other cases as well as legalese, but is still very understandable to the average person.

At the end of the day, this case, this decision and all the attendant hype, points, counter-points and pontificating by every side is actually doing we the people a favor. This is a life lesson that we all need to remember. Get the facts and decide for yourself.

It leaves a bad taste already. The mandate said you must BUY. So the whiz kids who wrote it infact had a law that would not be constitutional. They, after a two year effort had a looser as written. So much for the mental giants we elected. But it gets better...instead of throwing it out on the basis of how it was written and presented, our Supreme Court decides it can do the job of legislators and goes ahead and fixes it by saying we need to change the word "mandate and buy" to mean "being taxed". Never was the word tax used before this. Well thanks court guys and gals but who the hell asked you. So, with this kind of start and major screw ups...I am holding my breath while we get into this monster legislation and see what time brings. We are going broke and no one seems to care. If that sounds mean spirited let me add that I am all for bennies...just so long as we can afford them and are not decieved as taxpayers as to what they will do and what they will cost. Spin it anyway you want but it is rotten in the way it has been handed to us from the very begining. All I have left is my vote!

Edward, you have a voice, an opinion, a vote and the right to exercise all three.

@Edward
Why are people so frightened by the word "Tax", it really is not that scary if you think about it. Every benefit we derive as citizens , comes from taxation, either Federal or local Government. Unfortunately we don't get to choose how our taxes are spent. As far as the ACA is concerned, there is a lot of mis-information out there with regards to this act, but if you read it, you will see, that overall, it is beneficial for most people. The most contentious part seems to be the mandate, but as I read that part, it makes people who mis-use and free load off of the system pay a somewhat fair share. Others, like me, have been paying into the system for many years and it is US that have been paying for theses people. Without them in the system, I am sure insurance rates would be lower for all. I can go into other parts of the bill that is advantageous tithe average consumer, butmy fingers are tired (G). Happy 4th to all.

The word "Tax" tells me I'll have to pay for not just my family but alot of others. The expectation of the Obama administration is that half of the so called 30 million uninsured will be added to the welfare (oops I mean medicade) rolls. Who do you think will be paying for these people. Our state is already deeply indebt.
What happen to Obama's promise "No new taxes on those making less than $250,000? http://www.humanevents.com/2012/06/30/wsj-chief-economist-75-of-obamacare-costs-will-fall-on-backs-of-those-making-less-than-120k-a-year/

Call it a tax or call it a payment ( people who buy their own insurance) or call it a payroll deduction (people who get it through their employer), Or pick another word that doesn't frighten you so much. It's a cost that we have to pay, unless you're suggesting that we just let people suffer and die.
Edward Andrysiak July 2, 2012 at 02:19 pm
Max...I don't think the folks are heartless. We complain because it will cost and arm and leg with the government handling it..."change we need" didn't come with any new ideas did it. Bitching is one thing having a new idea is another. I have to wonder how easy it would be to make hospital zones/districts...something like the fire protection districts we have. Hospitals could impose a tax for caring for the indigent *in their area* which is passed to the folks who live in that district. I'll bet that would be more cost effective! Thank God the gang bangers on the south side of the city wouldn't be in our "district." But then, the hospital tax in those heavily populated areas would be spread across a lot of payers. The problem we have is that most potlticians are lawyers who get their answers from the books on their shelf which always goes back to prescedent. There isn't one for "change we need"...and new ideas.

Quoting figures from a Fox-bot that works for Murdoch and in in Fox News daily, does nothing for your argument. Your traitorous attack on supporting our country and our people is typically twisted by the partisan rantings of a so called "news" organization. Find a more reliable source.
Olddeegee July 2, 2012 at 02:36 pm
Your premise is a bit off. I've found that if I take the time, and read several viewpoints, the fog clears a bit. There are those that rely on a single source, and therein lies the problem. Yes there is spin, just as there has always been, but due diligence and taking your responsibilities as an informed voter seriously is not a casual affair. It takes study to fully understand the decisions made in DC. Sadly, in this era of exaggerated confirmation bias, people tend to look no further than the answer that they wanted in the first place.

I work for a community college; the insurance committe did a study about the impact of Obamacare on costs; at the present $20M per year is spent on healthcare (we are self-insured)--in 2018, due to the penalties we will be charged because we have what Obama considers a cadillac plan, the cost will rise to $118M PER YEAR! From $20M to $118 because of penalties. It will be impossible to pay this amount and we will be (and are) forced to pay and pay so we stay under the cadillac plan cost--it is thought we will be forced into a goverment program, what I believe is the intent of Obamacare.

To what end? How does it help the government to do this to you?
my opinion July 3, 2012 at 05:29 pm
Olddeegee, I thought you were informed. What do you mean by "How does it help the government to do this to you?" This is all about control. The government knows what is best for everyone and keeps its power by making people dependent upon it for everything. What do you think LBJ's "Great Society" was all about? You must vote to keep all the bennies that the government gives you.....so you are permanently tied to one party, the party of freebies. What ever happened to personal responsibility?
It is not that I'm heartless, I donate more money to charity then the VP. I just believe that charitable and church based programs do a more efficient job of taking care of people. Nothing the government controls (with the exception of the armed services) is efficient. Too much waste and bureaucracy, as well as just piling on more RECORD debt.
Olddeegee July 3, 2012 at 05:55 pm
Wow. You bought the "Government wants to control us" ploy hook, line, and sinker, didn't you? Read the Constitution, we are the government. Vote, protest, volunteer, and you are the government. The only people who stand to benefit from the systematic dismantling of services from our government are corporate interests who's profit motive dictates the replacement of all social programs with fee based models. By convincing a nearly illiterate population that destroying their democratically formed programs is in their best interests, people such as yourself are doing the work for them. As time goes on, governments change. In varying degrees, they care about the general population. Corporations don't die. They never have the best interests of the people as their main priority.
I'm for capitalism with strong social programs that serve the people in order to provide the best workforce available in order to meet the demands of modern society. You seem to believe, "I've got mine, why should I care about anybody else?" Seriously, you should reassess your values.

This is a link to a quiz that helps clarify some of the misunderstood parts of the bill. I found it very informative.

Thank you Olddeegee...I agree with your take and I'll check out the link as well....better to look for information than wait for those in "power" as it stands today to force it into my brain.
If we don't all reassess our individual values as a collective human race , they win.

I am just wondering how long this suspense filled soap opera will continue? Bottom line: HurtadoRead More knew his buddy needed a job...so; he and his majority board members made a mockery of local government due process and gave Mr. Peck a job, even though Hurtado voted with the past board to unanimously select an Exec…who is still under a contract. And then decided there was a need to pay a board secretary (who jumped out of the frying pan…smart move) and then appointed someone without pay. And of course there is a need to have a paid political hack to help publicly spin the board’s craziness via press releases.
AlaskaDreaming June 17, 2013 at 12:22 pm
I hate to ask the obvious of Mr. Peck (not that I expect him to answer anyway), but why is thisRead More announcement coming from the Executive Director rather than our newly appointed Director of Communications?
Bad News Bears June 18, 2013 at 02:53 pm
Mr. Peck, please answer 2 questions for me: 1. If you are cutting $800K but AdministrativeRead More Salaries are up over $118K, where are the cuts coming from. I have always been a patron of the Park District and want to know which of my programs your skimming off to pay yourself and Mr. Booth. 2. "Our staff deserves a lot of credit for this budget,” Peck said, “as their efforts to hold the line wherever possible have led to our success on behalf of District residents." Is reducing hours of employees the way you reward your staff now? I'm very upset that you honestly thought that cutting loyal employees hours instead of offering benefits was a good idea. I have a better one, cut the hours of Mr. Booth who has an unnecessary job and use his pay and salaries to offset the 4 loyal part-time workers. I will not hold my breath for your answers since answering questions to the people who pay your salary isn't on your to do list
