Bengal 5K Postponed After Flooding

The Eastside Shuffle was slated for April 21.

Updated: This event has been cancelled and will be rescheduled for a later date, according to Plainfield police.

Plainfield East High School’s inaugural “Eastside Shuffle” 5K run and walk, scheduled for Sunday, April 21, 2013 has been canceled because this week’s heavy storms continue to cause numerous road closures and dangerous conditions throughout the area. 

Organizers plan to reschedule the event if possible, but a new date has not been set yet.

“After talking to the police, we decided to cancel the Eastside Shuffle to ensure the safety of our runners and supporters,” said PEHS Assistant Band Director Justin Koszarek, who organized the event. 

“We apologize for any inconvenience this decision may cause,” Koszarek said.

Participants who had already registered and would like a refund can contact Koszarek at (815) 577-0324 orjkoszare@psd202.org Otherwise, registration fees will be transferred to the rescheduled date.

The Plainfield East High School (PEHS) Band Program and PEHS Earth Club will coordinate the first-ever Bengal Eastside Shuffle 5K Run/Walk and 1 mile Fun Run for kids.  This event will take place in and around the area of Plainfield Village Hall, Settlers' Park, Ira Jones Middle School and Wallin Woods subdivision. The 5K Run/Walk will begin at 9 a.m. with the Fun Run scheduled to begin immediately after the conclusion of the 5K.

Police have issued the following advisories for residents:

  • The Bengal Eastside Shuffle will require the following road closures:
    • Van Dyke Road south of Lockport Street
    • Village Center Drive east of Van Dyke Road
    • Ottawa Street from Van Dyke Road to Ira Jones Middle School
  • Road closures will begin at approximately 8:30 a.m. and are expected to last until 10:15 a.m.
  • The 1 mile Fun Run will occur entirely within Settlers' Park and should not cause any road closures.
  • Parking will be restricted on Van Dyke Road, Ottawa Street, and Village Center Drive.

Residents seeking access to the Wallin Woods subdivision may experience some delays entering or leaving the neighborhood, police said.
