Keeping Up with the Aftermath of the Overnight Storms

Flooding and power outages remain the biggest problems, officials say.

Flotsam and jetam from the thunderstorms that moved through the Plainfield area overnight:

  • Portions of County Line Road, 127th Street, 135th Street, Ridge Road and Van Dyke Road are closed due to fooding, Plainfield village spokeswoman Amy De Boni said. There is water over roadways in other areas and on U.S. 30, but those roads remain open for now, she said.
  • The National Weather Service has announced a flash flood warning for Will and Kendall counties through 5 p.m. today. The most recent forecast is calling for a 30 percent chance of more rain this afternoon, 60 percent tonight, 60 percent Friday and 60 percent Friday night.
  • In addition to Southern Belle's restaurant, lightning caused roof fires at homes at 16506 Mueller Circle and 6239 Southfield Lane but damage was limited to roof areas and there were no injures, according to the Plainfield Fire Protection District.
  • The Plainfield Police Department picnic that had been scheduled for this evening at the Walker's Grove tot lot has been canceled because of the weather-related problems in town. It will be rescheduled for August or September, a police spokesman said.
  • Between 3,000 and 10,000 people remain without power in the Joliet area, according to ComEd. Several power lines went down and transformers were knocked out in the Plainfield area because of the storm, but no major intersections were affected, fire district Lt. Scott Moore said.
