Severe Storm Watch Issued for Plainfield; Cruise Night Canceled

Severe weather could be headed our way.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Will and Kendall counties until 5 a.m. Wednesday.

According to the Joliet Weather Center:

"Severe storms are firing in the Bloomington-Normal area and our area is on the northern fringe of this current watch. These storms appear to be staying south of the area. However a new severe storm watch may be issued for the remainder of northern Illinois (the Storm Prediction Center is monitoring the area for a possible watch) It is very difficult to say when storms will move in, but please be prepared at any time the remainder of today and tonight."

A flash flood watch is also in place for northern Illinois, including Will County, until Wednesday night.

The threat of severe weather has prompted the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce to cancel Tuesday's Cruise Night event in downtown Plainfield.

According to the National Weather Service, thunderstorms may produce damaging winds, potentially in excess of 70 mph, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, hail the size of quarters and heavy rain.
